After Jaime had told me about his brother, my body shook. My brain was running around in circles, and my eyes were blinking uncontrollably.
I thought about it for half a second and remembered. The car that hit him was me. But the thing is, this didn't happen in real life. It happened in one of my dreams, and I couldn't seem to understand why his story wouldn't line-up with mine in that one respect. All the descriptions aligned, and I even remember the moment where the police were talking to me, and asking me questions. I remember looking and the boy in the backseat with his eyes closed, and head against the window.
Then I had an epiphany... Jaime was there, with his mom and dad yelling at him at the top of their lungs, beating him, even... I shut my eyes tight and tried to forget, but my mind wouldn't let me.Their car had a dent in the back right corner and mine had one in the front left corner. I remember swerving. I remember hitting them. I remember Jaime.
What the fuck is happening to me?
My legs were shaking and the cereal I was previously eating was on the floor. Where was Jaime?
He was just sitting next to me not two seconds ago, and now he's gone. What happened. What's happening. I'm losing my mind.
Vic, it's okay. You're not losing your mind. Calm down and take a deep breath
"Jaime?!" I yelled out, replying to the voice that had spoken to me.
Yes?
"Where are you?!?!?!" I asked, scared.
"I'm right here." Jaime said, walking from the kitchen to the living room.
"What just happened?" I put my hands on the couch and tried to grasp reality. There was no way Jaime could have left my sight. I was here the whole time. So was he.
"I just got up to get some food?" He said, shaking a bag of popcorn.
"No. No. No. You were here. You were here the whole time. I didn't see you move until I didn't see you anymore. There's no way you could have left."
Jaime walked towards me and sat down close to me, and put his hand on mine.
"Vic..."
He paused after saying my name like something important was about to be said, but before he could spill any secret he could have, I stopped him.
"No, please don't. I can't handle anything surprising right now. I might have a heart attack, or I might fall out onto the floor. I don't know." I said, my voice shaking now.
Why am I so out of it right now.
"Vic, tell me what happened when I left. Tell me exactly what happened."
"No, I can't. You'll think I'm insane. You'll leave. You'll never come back. You'll.....vanish."
"I can assure you that I won't." He said, grabbing my hand tighter.
"I just. It's too much to say right now. I still have to figure out what's happening before I can say anything."
"Well...what if I told you I could tell you what's happening. I can explain everything."
