Chapter One - Save the Cake

Emma

It was a quiet day in rainy Kent, Montana. School was on for today, even though it was a federal holiday. The rain was pouring down like a million tiny waterfalls from the dark clouds above. The radio was on talking about how the Supers' in this city were doing. They replayed an interview they had done about a week ago with Blitz, one of the newest Supers' on the street.

"-So, Blitz, how is it to be a Super?" DJ Hank asked.

"Honestly, it's really tiring but I love it. I just love the rush of adrenaline I get when I keep people safe from villains and do-no-gooders." His modulated voice responded, seemingly full of sincerity and honesty.

Hank laughed, "hahaha, I bet. So recently you've gone against Magistrat, the Supervillain known for his magical pow-"

I shut it off because these interviews just got annoying. It was always about the Supers remarking on how they defeated the latest villain and saying that the other villains should watch out. It got so redundant because the villains never heeded it. At least though our city was pretty safe, even with all of the Supers and Supervillains running amuck. And surprisingly, it felt like the police were okay with it.

Bright light immediately illuminated my room with the sound of thunder rumbling not long after. "How fun," I groaned as I got ready. The view out of my bedroom window depressed me, I didn't like the cold-to-the-bone, warmth-sucking rains of early spring. It meant I had to wear my thick, itchy sweaters that I got as hand-me-downs from my older sister who got them from other relatives so who knows how old they are. And it didn't help that it turned into a thunderstorm too.

(We had missed too many days over the winter due to snow-ins. Go Montana weather!)

I finished getting dressed and headed down stairs to make myself a small breakfast. I assembled it quickly and shoved a slice of toast in my mouth as I rushed out the door. I had barely made it past the covered porch when my mother called me out:

"Emma, don't forget your lunch!"

I groaned turning back and took the walk of shame back to the kitchen. My mother smirked at me while holding the mini cooler holding the food. It looked pretty heavy.

"It's a chicken salad sandwich, by the way, darling," my mom told me as she passed it along. "Plus there's something extra in there that I think you'll love." She grinned pulling me into a nice and warm hug. I mumbled a 'thanks' before skirting out of the house.

(Have we been introduced yet? No? Oh, I'm Emily Thomas, but everyone just calls me Emma. Glad I did that before I forgot. I forget a lot of stuff honestly. Like my cousin's tenth birthday but that's besides the point. Haha.)

One of the other reasons I didn't like the rain much was because I didn't have a car and I was forced to walk to school. Albeit, it was only a couple of blocks away but... yeah, I've got nothing. I just don't like the rain. Plus I loathe bundling up in thick jackets and coats, it's so much extra weight I'd rather not carry with me the whole day.

It was a short journey to school. Not much happened except when I ran into one of my best friends, Lorraine. I've always called her Lori though, because she insisted that I do because she said that Lorraine was an old person's name. She's crazy but I love her. She lived on the way to school so I always walked with her.

"Emma!" Lori shouted from her porch. She waved me over and grinned, showing off her shiny teeth. I couldn't help but to grin in response as I made my way over to her house. I started to jog, trying my hardest to avoid the puddles formed by the rain. She enveloped me in a hug when I reached and laughed. We hadn't seen each other in two weeks because her aunt and uncle had taken her and her twin brother to Seattle to visit colleges.
