"Why?"

Suddenly, the classroom door bursts open, and all of my classmates start screaming.

I am not afraid, I am not afraid, I am not-

"Everyone stand up!" someone shouts from outside, and I look back at Miss Merkins, who rises to one knee. "NOW!" Everyone stands but me.

Behind me, Cerina is crying.

"It'll be okay," I tell her, and she glares at me.

"My mom told me it's all your fault," she spits, and her eyes are red.

A large man runs through the door, and everyone is screaming again.

"Where's the girl?!" he demands, looking directly at Miss Merkins. "Where's the Spark?"

My teacher points at me, and I remember watching the television with my mother.

~

The television glows faintly, and Grey crawls over from his blanket, knowing an announcement will be broadcasted soon.

"Mom, hurry! They're showing us something! Hurry!" I yell behind me. Father is already standing in the doorway, looking confused. I turn back towards the screen, which is now a bright white.

"Good evening!" a cheerful lady greets us. "Welcome to the Evening Show, the newest news program since the rebellion!"

"Mom, what's the-"

My mother sits beside Grey and shushes me. "Nothing you need to know, Little Duck," she says, and kisses me on the forehead.

The lady on the screen claps her hands daintily, like she's wiping crumbs off of her gloves. "We have exciting news today! In the old ruins of the Capital, the residents are stripping themselves of their fashionable clothing and putting on their rebel shoes - an uprising has-"

Mom turns the TV off and looks behind her at my father. They look grim, sad, and scared.

"What is it?" I shake her arm, she doesn't look at me. "Mom, tell me what happened!"

"Nothing," she whispers to me. The house is quiet except for Grey who chews on his blanket. "Don't worry, Little Duck, there's nothing to worry about."

~

The man grabs me by the arm. "What's your name, girl. Hurry up."

I tremble. "Ivory Everdeen-Mela-"

"Gale!" the man shouts, and another man steps into the room. "Gale, it's-"

"Stop holding her like that," the man called Gale barks. He looks at me kindly, like a daisy in the fields behind my house. "Hello, Ivy."

I don't know who he is, but Miss Merkins scowls. "You're live in District 4 now, don't you? Why are you here?"

Gale walks over and picks me up carefully and without trouble - Father always tells me I'm getting heavy, that his leg hurts. Gale ignores my teacher, instead looking at the other man. "C'mon, let's get her out of here."

"What about my students?!" Miss Merkins yells. Outside the classroom the older kids are running out through the halls, yelling and screaming.

The first man pushes Gale and I out the door. "Class is dismissed."
