How It Could Have Been (Part 12)

Petra remained asleep on Levi's chest for hours as Haru played with Emiko and Levi quietly read a book as he stroked Petra's soft ginger hair.
After 3 hours Emiko and Haru came back and Petra woke up, they started picking up the picnic area then headed out. Petra and Levi held hands the entire way home. When they got home Levi went into his office and got some work done until Petra called him in for dinner.
"Today was fun, daddy's!" Emiko said happily as she stabbed a carrot with her fork.
"It sure was, honey." He said gently and looked up at Haru, "So what did you guys do while me and mommy got some alone time?"
"I don't want to talk about it." Haru said quickly and took a sip of water.
"Why not?" Levi asked pressing into his son, seeing how uncomfortable it was making him.
"He's just mad because I won when we were playing hide and seek, because I'm faster!" Emiko said excitedly as she stared at her very much annoyed brother who was giving her a death stare.
"Is that so?" Levi said almost smiling.
"It's only because there were only 2 people playing and she was goose guarding the base, there was no way even you could get past her." Haru declared, not wanting the conversation to continue.
"Just sounds like she's faster." Levi mumbled teasing his son to see how much he could take.
"She's so much younger, so naturally she has more energy which can make her legs move, long distance I am definitely faster." Haru said going on and on.
"Sure." He said in a sarcastic voice and Haru got frustrated then Emiko chimed in.
"It's ok big bro, we're only kidding." She said in her sweet 5 year old voice. Which made Haru and Petra smile at her innocent little face. Levi on the other hand stood up abruptly and left the room.
"Levi! She didn't know, come back!" Petra called as she chased him through the house. She found him in the attic and sighed with relief to see him there.
"Honey-"
"No."
"Words like bro are so common that you can't shut down and lock up every time someone says it. I know you miss them, I know that she called you that, but you can't shut us out, you especially can't shut out your DAUGHTER!" Petra said getting fed up.
"Do you know-"
"The physical and mental pain you went through? And how many people you lost?" She finished for him the continued, "Ya I do know, cause I lost people too, I lost my best friend, I almost lost you several times." We have all moved on, except you, you are stuck in this little bubble that's filled with the past, and you can pop it at any moment but you refuse to. Look at Eren, he had a similar situation, he lost his mom to the Titans at a young age, his father turned him into a Titan and then he ate his own father. Mikasa, her parents were murdered in front of her she was about to die too but Eren came and killed two of the murderers then, even after seeing her parents being killed she got back up and fought on. Armin was constantly being bullied about what he loved but he never fought back and continued to love it no matter what, he too watched countless people die and was traumatized at first but realized that that did nothing for him and he decided that they did what they could. Sasha was starved as a child and lost her younger sister the way you lost your moth-"
"ENOUGH!!!!!!!" Levi yelled with rage and Petra realized he was crying. She figured she had gone too far and walked over to her husband who was curled up on the floor hugging his legs and crying. She hears footsteps and turns to see Haru and Emiko, she very calmly told them to go away and shut the door, they obeyed and turned back to Levi.
"Levi? Levi, I know you can hear me, listen I just want you to know that I understand your grievance but that was a long time ago. Your kids are concerned for you, they just want you to love them." She says quietly as she hung onto his shoulders and held him tight to her.
"I know." He said calmly and laughed a little.
"What?" Petra asks laughing awkwardly, confused to why he was laughing.
"Just thinking about Jaeger's bratty face when I kicked him in the courtroom." He said and almost burst out laughing.
"Oh." She said then started laughing as well and before they knew it they were recalling the good times from that dark dark time and it might just have popped Levi's bubble.
