Chapter 39

“There is never a time or place for true love.

It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, throbbing moment."

-Sarah Dessen

Flashback:

“Do you believe in soul mates?” Teegan whispers, holding me from behind as we stare at the night sky.

                  I blink, feeling tired.

                  “I don’t…..know…” I say truthfully.

                  And I really didn’t.

Being here in Teegan’s arms, the only thing I can think is that fairy tales do come true, that for once, I had something I wanted.

Of course, I was a far cry from the fair snow white or the humble Cinderella but maybe-just maybe, I didn’t need to be.

Even if I didn’t grow up in a castle or roam the forest escaping an evil queen, I was Aria.

I didn’t need to be Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty to get my prince.

I sink deeper into his arms, the steady feel of his warm breath on my neck making everything seem hazy.

                  Soul mates.

It seemed like such a big word. It was a big word for teenagers like us.

Teegan is quiet, and I briefly wonder if I’ve offended him.

“Do you believe in Fairy tales?” I ask.

“Like lava breathing dragons and knights in shinning armor?” Teegan mutters, half amused.

“Yes, like princesses and happily ever after,” I clarify.

I feel Teegan press his cheek to mine, his fingers entwined with mine.

                  “I Don’t know,” he says.

                  I feel like laughing.

“We’re a suckish couple,” I say quietly- with all intents and purposes not really meaning it in that way.

                  Teegan stiffens. “What?”

Laughing, I can’t even form my words and when Teegan turns me around to face him, he looks worried.

“I’m not sure if I believe in soul mates and you’re not sure if fairy tales exist, where does that leave us as a couple?” I ask, my laughter bubbling down.

Teegan stares into my eyes, stooping his head to keep me eye level.

“Why do we need to believe in fairy tales and soul mates to have what we have?”
