1962
20 year old Grace's POV:

I scurried down the damp street struggling to hold up my books.  I was on my way to class.  After that fateful day back in 1955 my life has been anything but normal.

In an attempt to harness my newfound "abilities" I somehow managed to convince a child care center to place me in a foster home.  Unfortunately since I was somewhat of a wanted criminal I couldn't stay in one place for too long.

When I was about 18 I decided to ditch foster care and live on my own.  It's not too hard to get what you need if you have a good persuasion method.   I find the solitude is more comforting than a family, at least I can't hurt anyone.  It gives me the space I need to control whatever curse that was thrust upon me for some god forsaken reason.

I've been accepted to the university of my dreams, finally starting school again.  I plan to major in genetic mutation, which after going through loads of research found out is the reason I have these supernatural abilities.

I continued to jog down the bustling street, weaving through the crowds of people.  I didn't want to be late for class again, the professor hated it when his students were late to class. I quickly scurried through the empty halls of the college that was now my longest lasting home and finally found the lecture hall.

I had my head down taking notes as the professor spoke.

"Would anyone care to explain where genetic mutations originated from?" The professor asked to his class. I snapped my head up and raised her hand before anyone else could.

"Yes. Grace?" The professor said gesturing to me.

"Most recent studies show that a genetic mutation can occur when there is a mistake in the copying of a DNA sequence. It normally occurs during mitosis."  I finished with a smile, content with my knowledge.

"Very good Grace", the professor said as he turned back to the board. Joy swelled in my chest, it was very rare that he complimented his students.

"So class your assignment for this semester is to write a thesis on genetic mutation. It should be at least 10 pages long. It will be due by no later than May tenth."

"Also no plagiarizing!" He yelled at the students who exited the hall as fast as they could.  As other students went off to party or avoid their work I mentally noted the due date and headed to the library to start my research.

I made my way to the deepest and quietest part of the library to start my paper.

I searched and searched for probably about an hour before I stumbled upon a thesis about genetic mutation that hadn't been used before.

"Charles Xavier. Hm?" I said aloud "Well I hope he's good."  As I made my way deeper into the thesis I felt a tap on my shoulder which made me jump.

I turned around only to see John. John Thomas.  Gosh he got on my last nerves, always flirting with every girl in his class, a player really, that no one liked.

"If your not busy, I would love to take you out for dinner tonight" he said trying to look seducing while draping himself on top of my work.  I rolled my eyes and gagged internally.

"No thanks John I'm really busy if you can't already see that."

"Oh come on I know you'd love to." He rebuffed still with his cockiness.  Clearly he had the wrong idea even after being rejected. I pushed him off of my work and gathered everything up, then started to walk away.
