. . . the before

ROSEWOOD was a picture-perfect portrait of suburban America. Boutiques, restaurants, thriving businesses, and seemingly happy citizens flourished in the charming town. It was a place where everyone knew everyone and if you got caught doing one thing bad everyone knew.

The trick was not to get caught. Maybe that was what drew Alison to Lavender when they were younger. How both girls acted perfect but only those who really paid attention knew that they were always up to something. Maybe that was why Lavender was closer to Alison then the other girls.

"I can't believe you were able to get away and join your actual friends." Alison said full of snark as Lavender exited the Hastings house into the backyard.

"I can't stay for long Ali." Lavender just smirked at her friend. As they started to make their way to the barn, wanting to get out of the storm.

"Whatever." Alison rolled her eyes at Lavender. "I have an idea." Alison said as she stopped in front of the barn, where they could clearly hear Justin Timberlake's Sexy Back.

"I'm listening." Lavender replied knowing that it would probably be fun, a smirk tempting to take over her face.

"Come on." Alison said as she pulled Lavender around the side of the barn.

A strong wind blew outside the barn and thunder rumbled in the distance. The year was 2006. Tween-girl posters and Pottery Barn Teen lounge furniture made the rustic barn the perfect spot for that night's slumber party.

Justin Timberlake's Sexy Back played from the iPod Dock, as the girls danced and giggled. A sharp crack of lightning ripped through the barn causing the lights to flicker then go dark. The girls, frightened, cried out as the music abruptly died.

The girls fumbled in the dark, before someone lit a candle, and someone else turned on a flashlight. A disturbing knock on the wall could be heard coming from outside the barn.

"Something's out there." Aria said, frightened, as well as the other girls.

The knocking got louder and closer to the barn door. Spencer reached for the home phone before saying, "The line's dead." The knocking finally stopped as the handle on the barn door started to turn.

"Jesus." Hanna said, scared of what was on the other side of the door.

The door then opened but no one was there. Slowly, the girls huddled together, and walked toward the open doorway. They peered outside but saw nothing. It was all just darkness. Windy. Eerie. Then two dark figures lunged from the darkness, making them scream.

"Gatcha!" Lavender and Alison said at the same time.

Alison DiLaurentis and Lavender Morales stood in the doorway of the barn. Alison, beautiful, smart, and popular. She was the type of girl that made other girls feel cool when they were hanging out with her. Casual chic, her blonde hair is tossed in a messy ponytail.

Lavender was also beautiful, smart, and popular. She was rich, and sometimes entitled. Lavender was at times a manipulative mean girl who killed with kindness. She stood beside Alison with her long, wavy brown hair draped over her left shoulder, and red lipstick ━━ her signature.

The girls breathed a sigh of relief as Alison and Lavender walked in and tossed their sleeping bags onto the floor, though both knew Lavender wouldn't be staying long. Lavender soon picked up the red cup that was placed on the coffee table, taking a sip of its contents.

"Ali, did you download the new Beyonce song?" Hanna asked as they all took a seat. Alison at the head of the group and Lavender to her right, next to Aria.

          "Not yet." Alison admitted.

"I'm loving her new video." Emily confessed as she got comfortable in her chair.

"Maybe a little too much, Em." Alison replied, though there were only three people in the room that knew what she meant behind it. "Your turn." Alison said as she passed the cup that Lavender drank from not long ago to Aria. "Go on." She urged the girl. Aria gave in and took a sip from it.

"Careful, Aria. Drink too much, and you'll tell us all your secrets." Spencer jokingly warned the smaller girl, before Aria passed it on to her, making the girls giggle.

"Friends share secrets. That's what keeps us close." Alison said, though Lavender knew there was something Alison wasn't telling them. She felt like it was something more than just a plain secret.

"That and our love Jesse McCartney." Lavender added, as she fake swooned over the celebrity that each girl confessed to loving, making the girls laugh once more.

"Drink up." Alison urged, through her laughter at her friend. Each girl took a sip from the red cup, though except Lavender and Alison as by the time it reached them it was empty.
It wasn't long until after that that the girls passed out.

Lavender giggled at her passed out friends as she stood up from her chair. "Sorry to leave you with this sad bunch, Ali, but I'll see you in the morning." Lavender said farewell to her only awake friend before leaving.

"What took you so long?" The boy who opened the door asked as the brunette walked into his room.

"The girls took a while to fall asleep, that's all." Lavender smirked as she placed herself on his bed. "Now come on." Lavender said as she rubbed the place on the bed beside her.
