"So, how did it go?" The voice of the Police Commissioner asked through Katie's mobile. It was pitch black outside, there were no street lights on, there never was lately. Katie had arrived home hours ago, but she knew her brother would be working late, especially with a mass serial killer about in the city. To pass the time, Katie just began to cook herself dinner, soup with meat and vegetables, which she had slurped down only moments before her brother rang.
"It went...quick." She replied honestly, running her fingers through her silky hair.
"Quick?" He seemed perplexed. Katie laughed, a soft giggle that she had ever since she was a child.
"Well, Deziel found something and cut the interrogation short." She grabbed her glass of lemon, lime and bitters and took a sip, sighing as she placed the glass back in front of her. Her house seemed lonely all of a sudden, the thoughts of her childhood flooding back to her. She remembered her brother and her playing hide and seek in their two-storey house in Brunswick, just on the outskirts of Melbourne City. Their laughs and giggles bounced around the house. When their mum would hear the laughing, she would often smile, a warmth invading her heart.
"What did he find?"
"You'll never believe it, but a Ouija Board."
"A Ouija Board?"
"Yeah," Katie smiled. "He seemed so glad to find it, and curious. In fact, he reminded me of you when you stumbled upon that crime book that made you want to be a cop. Remember? You would never let it out of your sight." She laughed again, nostalgia was settling in. She stared at her feet, a young Police Commissioner sitting in the corner of the lounge with the book in his hands, entering her memories, making her beam.
"Do I sense a tone of caring in your voice?" Her brother teased.
"Listen, I really need to get some sleep, I'm sorry. Love you." She quickly changed the subject. They both said their goodbyes and Katie hung up before her brother had the chance to inquire again. She was not ready to admit to anyone else of her growing maternal feelings for the boy. And no one will ever know, she thought, smiling as she went up to bed, ready for the next day.

Katie heard the glass shatter. It was a loud shrill as glass splattered along the tiled kitchen floor. Her heard pounded as she grabbed her .9mm handgun from it's holster, which hung alongside her forensic uniform. Her eyes had adjusted to the darkness quickly, nullifying the need to put on any of her lights. As she made her way to the flight of stairs, she made sure she moved softly along the carpet, placing her heel with care. She stopped only once to make sure the safety was off on her gun. It was at that time she could hear a voice, a familiar, creepy voice.
"That bitch...she is onto us...I KNOW, I know...Shhh...little one mustn't make a noise." The voice said, sounding like it was having an argument with someone else, even though Katie could not hear anyone else. She was about to turn the corner to the stairs when she was met with a grisly face.
Craven stood before her, his eyes a deep red, his face scratched and pale. His back was hunched, she could see the contours of his spine protruding from it. He had become someone else, or rather, looking like someone else. In his hand, was a machete, long curved and sharp. Sharp enough to behead a man.
"Found the little princess...too bad she has found the dragon..." He laughed manically, slicing at her stomach. Katie was lucky to have jumped back in time, as she could feel the tip of the blade tearing through her pyjamas while she was in mid-air.
