Chapter Two.
Cyril heaved when another demon fell down dead. Fire consumed his body before he disappeared in a swirl of black smoke.
It's been like this the whole night. It's almost morning and Cyril is exhausted.
"Is it like this every night?" He asked Maya as they walked out of the alley.
"No, not even close. We have to get back to HQ."
Cyril hurried behind her as she increased her pace to the direction of their car. Speeding through town minutes later, he held onto his seat trying to hold himself from being thrown out of the car with how fast Maya was driving.
He sighed in relief when they finally skidded into the parking lot. He followed her as she hurried into the building and headed for his father's office.
"McKinley, we need to talk?" she said glaring at the other two people in the room.
"Okay gentlemen, I believe that's all. Get back to me when you complete your mission," he said and the two men stood up, leaving the room. Not before sending scalding glares at Maya.
"Why did you pair Cyril with me?" She asked as soon as the door closed.
Cyril frowned. Was he that bad.
"What do you mean? He needed experience and-"
"Don't bullshit me McKinley! Tell me why you paired him with me. Keith, his partner, works on advanced cases. Why didn't you choose him?" she questioned and he could see her eyes narrow in anger.
"Okay, sit down and I'll explain," he motioned to the recently vacated seats opposite his desk.
Cyril took a seat wondering what all the fuss was about. He thought the night went pretty well. Apart from exhaustion, he thought everything was fine. It's what he wanted and he wasn't going to complain.
"I wanted someone I could trust to make sure nothing happens to him,"
"Really dad? This again,"
"No, its not that. Let me start from the beginning," he adjusted himself in his seat before continuing, "You are not human Cyril."
Now he was confused. But then again, considering his last case...
"I didn't adopt you from an orphanage. A man brought you to me when you were just a baby. He told me that I should take care of you and make sure no harm comes to you. He warned me that it'll be harder when you awaken but through the years, nothing happened and I thought maybe you were just human and the man made a mistake. But then we had that case two weeks ago. You awakened."
"The dragon's fire. It was fate that you were there. That we were involved in that particular case. And since then, for some reason, demons seem to have you as a target. That's why you were home for two weeks. I had to come up with a spell to keep you safe while outside our home. And it's the same reason I paired you will Maya. I knew you'd be safe even if the shields failed."
By this time Cyril's mind was in a swirl.
"Have you ever seen the man again?" He asked his dad after some time of silence.
"No. But he's not one you can easily forget."
Cyril sighed, "then if I'm not human. What am I?"
"I can answer that."
They all froze at the new voice in the office. Their gazes went to the back corner where a shadow of a man stood.
How did he get there? Cyril was sure there wasn't anyone there a few moments ago.
The figure stepped out of the shadows to reveal a blonde man. He was dressed in a dark blue suit, a light blue shirt and tie. The look of a self satisfied business man. A smirk plastered on his flawless face.
In seconds, both Maya and his dad were in front of him. In normal circumstances he'd be mad, but something inside him told him that this man was extremely dangerous. His heart was beating fast as he took a step back. Trying to create more distance between him and the stranger.
With a flick of his wrist, his dad and Maya were sent skidding across the room and to the wall with a thud. Cyril's eyes widened in shock as he stared at the two slumped unconscious. He tried moving to them but for some some reason he couldn't move.
"And where do you think your think you're going?" The man asked grabbing his attention.
"Who are you? What do you want?" He asked putting on a brave face even though he was scared shitless.
This made the man grin for some reason. "I'm never going to get tired of this. Killing you over and over again. Seeing his face as you die. But it's also getting annoying. Why can't you die for good. I'll make sure I do it right this time," a menacing grin on his his face as he approached him.
Cyril fought the invisible force holding him. He didn't want to die. What has he done wrong for this man to want to kill him so bad. A sudden slap to his cheek brought him back to reality as he sprawled to the ground. He held his stinging cheek. He fought back tears, biting his bottom lip so as to not cry out.
"Pathetic," Cyril heard before a pain he's never felt before assaulted his being. He couldn't hold the cries and tears then. He screamed,, but for some reason nobody seemed to hear him. Not even the two still unconscious people stir. He was really going to die here. For something he doesn't know. He closed his eyes as the pain seemed to increase as the seconds passed. All he felt was pain. Agonizing PAIN...
