He made the statement on January 1. On the day before yesterday (December 30) he was 25. He turned 26 on December 31. That year, he would turn 27, so the "next year" he would turn 28.
Riddle: You live in a place where six months of the year is mild summer and during the other six months the mercury goes drastically down! You own a lake where there is a small island. You want to build a house over there and need to get some materials across there. You have no boat, plane or anything which you can use to transport them to the island. How will you solve the problem?
