Chapter One

There's a new kid at school. I honestly wouldn't care, except that she managed to beat the school record in every sport known to mankind, and for reasons unknown, everybody here seems to hate her.

Alright, so the reasons might be known. Our school is called the Hornville Sports Academy for a reason. So our entire school is super competitive. (Well, except me; I gave up on sports long ago. I'm not even quite sure why my parents enrolled me here.) Personally, I think the new girl is the most entertaining thing that's happened all year; especially when I learned that her name is Rainbow. Best name ever!

At lunch, I pick at my food. I never knew a burger could be spongy, but here it is. The pinnacle of my nightmares. A spongy school burger with cold fries. My life is ruined.

I see Rainbow enter the cafeteria and look around with superiority that quickly turns to nervousness as she realizes that almost everybody in the room is glaring at her. I watch her as she grabs a burger and makes a beeline for my table, which seems to have the only empty seats in the place. I'm the only one sitting here, since everybody else thinks I'm weird, due to the fact that I have zero interest in sports.

"Hey," Rainbow says in a slightly raspy voice. She has shoulder-length hair that's dyed rainbow, presumably to match her name.

"Hi," I answer. "Good job in all those sports today."

"Thanks. Why is this burger spongy?"

I shrug and give a little laugh. "I was just wondering the same thing. I'm Sunny, by the way."

She nods. "I know. I saw you earlier, in soccer class. What is this place, anyways? And why..." Rainbow looks like she has something on the tip of her tongue, but she shakes her head.  "Never mind."

"This is a sports academy. Don't you know that?" I ask, looking at her curiously.

Rainbow stares at her burger. "That's not what I meant. What is this world?"

I'm at a loss. "Um... planet Earth? Ever heard of it?"

"No," Rainbow responds slowly. "And that's exactly the problem. Have you ever heard of Equestria?"

This girl must be pulling my leg. Is she honestly trying to tell me she's from the land of My Little Ponies?! Sure, maybe I am a bit obsessed with them, but it's not like I actually believe that they exist. "Yeah, I've heard of it."

"Twilight told me about a place like this..." Rainbow reflects. I don't think she heard me. "When that filly - I mean, girl - stole her crown. I wonder if that's this place."

I start to laugh. "Sorry, kid, but this isn't that place."
