Part Seven

Bowen had left to the world with Annie and wouldn’t be back until the ceremony the next day. Eloise saw this as the perfect opportunity to escape. She left her bedroom for the first time in days to wander the halls. In Bowen’s absences the house seemed livelier than before but still void of people. Eloise found a set of stairs and climbed down them. At the end of the stairs was a small wooden door. With one swift motion Eloise twisted the knob and opened the door.

“Eloise?” She walked out into the dark kitchen that only had the glow of a single candle. “I thought you were staying in your room. Are you hungry or something?” Jake asked.

“No.” She whispered. “Where is everyone?”

“It is pretty late. Most are asleep or at least in their rooms.”

“Why aren’t you?”

“I just came to steal a cookie.” He said then finished off a glass of milk. She tried to edge out of the room without him noticing. “You don’t blend into the wall you know. So why are you down here so late?”

Eloise thought about that question. If she told Jake what she was up to he might be happy and want to help. But on the other hand if he knew how to leave why hadn’t he done so already? Could he even be trusted?

“I just wanted to get some air. I’ve been in that room for so long.” She lied.  She was on her own and decided that no one in this house could be trusted.

“I could take you out in the garden if you want…”

“Alright.” Eloise agreed before he could even finish his sentence. That was one obstacle out of the way. Jake took her by the hand.

“This way milady.” Beside a large bay window in the kitchen was a glass door. The door was unlocked allowing anyone to freely enter and exit as they wished. The door opened up to the stone patio. The gardens around them were like the sea making the estate an island. Jake walked them to the patio’s edge and they sat on a cushioned iron bench. Now that she was outside all she had to do was lose him then she would be home free.

“What kinds of flowers are in the garden?” Eloise asked setting her plan in motion.

“All kinds.” Jake said mindlessly.

“Like what?” She turned to him and placed a hand on his knee.

Jake shifted in his seat a little before he answered. “Um…well there are Roses.”

Eloise grinned to herself, her plan was working. “I don’t care very much for the way Roses smell.” She shook her head.

“I thought girls liked them.”

“Not this one. I like something more unique. The flowers here smell good but I can’t tell them apart from this far away. Would you mind if we walked around to visit some?” Eloise said hopefully. Sitting on the patio, stuck on that island was getting her no where.

“If that’s what you really want to do.” They stood up and Jake led the way to the entrance of the garden. Eloise followed closely behind listening to his footsteps to tell her where to go. But what his footsteps didn’t tell her that the step down from the patio to the garden’s path was a big one. The shock of her foot still falling through the air and not hitting the ground when she expected it to caused her to trip. Falling into Jake. “You got to watch were you’re going.” He chuckled. Then  helped her steady herself.
