Bree
I arrived at the hospital around 7 this morning with Nala and it's going on 3 in the afternoon.
"What's taking so long ? We've been waiting on discharge papers since 12" I said looking at Hakeem's doctor in his room.
"Miss I have 7 other patients you'll have to talk to a nurse about that." he said patting my shoulder and walking away. I adjusted Nala on my hip and walked over to a nurse to go off. Just before I could get the words out of my mouth Hassan pulled me back. "Calm down Bree. Ahmir went to get the papers and Raheem somewhere in here. He should be back in a little bit."
I rolled my eyes a little and walked to the visitor section and sat down with Nala on my lap and playing with my straight hair. I tried to look as good as possible today but it was hard since Nala started crying everytime I'd put her down or get out of her sight.
"How you like Nala?" Hassan said sitting down next to me. I shrugged. "It's cool. I mean I never thought I'd be taking care of someone's baby right now but she loves me so no real complaints." He nodded and looked at her play in my hair some more before we saw Raheem come around the corner.
Me and him have said words here and there but he's mostly quiet. He doesn't say much but I always see him observing.
"They waiting on Ms Fatima to come up here man. " he mumbled and sat down next to me. Ahmir walked up a little bit after him and silently mugged all of us. I just focused on playing with Nala until Hakeem's mom came.
Like clockwork she arrived 10 minutes later damn near sprinting into the recovery wing. Her and Hakeem talked for a little bit and she gave me a small smile before grabbing Nala. "Thank you for taking care of my baby Ms Ambria." She said smiling at Nala. Hakeem came out of the room in regular clothes and a wheelchair a little bit after her and all the boys stood up. "Now if you ever want to have a talk or come to a rally of mine in the neighborhood about the inequality of the black man-"
"Ma. Bree good" Hakeem said sounding annoyed. I thought their message was important but obviously he had other ideas. I have her a smile back and mouthed "I'll let you know" and she smiled and walked away caressing Nala. "Wassup y'all ready to eat ?" Hakeem said. I nodded while the boys just looked at each other.
While walking out of the hospital I texted Angela, Khadijah and Shay to tell them to meet me where we were eating, Hakeem wanted On The Border. I drove since he wasn't all the way healed and we all met the girls there and I slid into the booth neglecting to tell the boys I invited them. "Hey y'all" I said smiling and showcasing my 'baby smile' like Shay calls it.
All my girls looked bad af and it made me kind of insecure. Khadijah was the smallest one out of all of us but she was so adorable. Her natural hair didn't have a relaxer but her curls were much tighter and her hair was thicker. Her lips were huge and she looked like she came straight off a boat from the islands, mostly because her mother did.
Khadijah's dad was still in Barbados working but her and her mom moved her when she was in the third grade to start a better life. But here it is our senior year and her father still hasn't made it here.
Shay was dark and beautiful. She was as thick as a grown woman just like Angela and she had tattoos too, her mom was a nurse so she was always working and her dad was in jail. Shays real name isn't brought up much because her father named her and she claims she's embarrassed by it but we all think it's beautiful. Shays real hair is relaxed and is all the way to her waist but she wears weave to protect it.
"Girl you so underdressed" Angela said looking at my up and down. I had on some ripped jeans with some black timbs and a black long sleeve Henley shirt. My hair was parted straight down the middle but you couldn't tell because of my beanie, and it was straight since I'd straightened it last night. I shook my head and made a face because I knew I was but I didn't really care. "Y'all this is Hakeem, Hassan, Ahmir and Raheem" I said introducing everyone. Everyone spoke except Ahmir who looked like he was ready to go. I knew he was still upset about the fight but everyone was trying to come together to get along.
