Upon scaling their ship, Thaniel noticed a growing shadow. He ran across the deck to grab his spyglass, only to find that it was none other than Captain Redd's ship, the Plague, coming straight for them.
-----
"Boys!" his strong voice boomed. Lofty, large, and wielding an intimidating scar that braised the right side of his face, Captain Redd appeared from their own deck. "Fancy finding you here on this drabby little boat," he was backed by his menacingly grinning crew. "How has the merchant life been treating ya?" he mocked, taking a look at the goods crates piled on the deck.
"Much better than the weak living your ship provided," Thaniel replied with a bite, he was not only worried but upset that he had not seen this coming.
Thud!
A gangplank was dropped between the two ships. It sloped down from the larger, more pristine brig that was the Plauge.
Noticing his mates crossing the newly laid bridge, Redd smirked and faced the tense rebels, "I've been waiting a long time for this," satisfaction was on the tip of his tongue. "However, I thought I'd have something more to show for it than this dreary dinghy." He looked around at the small, washed up brig. With a scratched deck and faded sails, there was no appeal.
Tholom tensed up at the insult.
"Let Tholom go, I'm the one who rebelled in the first place," Thaniel attempted to negotiate.
"There's no point tryin' to be heroic here, Thany, you've both wrong me an' me crew, an' you're both going to pay," cackles rose from the crowd of burly men as they closed in on the boys, daggers in hand.
Now flinching, the boys awaited their doom only to be startled by a cry for help, diminishing in sound, and followed by a loud splash of a crewmate breaking the water.
What was that?! They all thought. They're questions were quickly answered when a tentacle of pure sea water rose from the side of the brig, grabbing hold of another crewmate's large waist and seemingly constricting it's prisoner. With a quick, but violent swing the pirate was slung into the sea. More and more tentacles shot up from the waves, picking off the crew with increasing intensity.
The gang flew across the deck and over the gangplank hoping to escape. Taking the retreat as a hint, the brothers began to prepare their ship to leave. Now alone, with the masts prepared and Thaniel at the helm, Tholom looked back as they tried to flee.
The sea appendages had subsided. However, they were both frustrated as they noticed two whirlpools at the stern of the ship preventing them from advancing.
"Brother!" Tholom shouted, trying to inform his brother. Within seconds another watery limb broke from the sea with it's end crashing onto the deck of the ship. Returning their arms from shielding their face of the salty sea, they both are shocked to find the little boy they had rejected in the alley moments ago standing where the arm had hit.
Proudly and with a cunning smirk on his face, he greeted them, "Well, don't you two look familiar?"
Character card of Captain Redd to the right.
