The boys happened upon a poor young girl attempting to steal an apple. They helped her when the merchant caught her and was about to reprimand her. That's when the guards stepped in!
While Thaniel's personality is similar to Sokka's from Avatar: The Last Airbender, the two brother's relationship are loosely (very loosely) based upon Dean and Sam Winchester from Supernatural and Tamaki and Kyoya from OHSHC.
Originally, Bartholomew's nickname was going to be Bart and not Tholom. And it really is pure coincidence that all three (so far) of the main character's nicknames begin with "Th".

"You don't look more than seven stones"
In many North-West European countries the stone was formerly used for purposes of trade. A stone is approximately 14 pounds (6.35 kilograms). This comment was how Thomas looked to be less than 100 pounds or 45 kilos. Quite the small frame!
Fun Fact from 1.3 | Attack on the Rebel
These sea appendages are synonymous with a waterbender's water tentacles from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Fun Fact from 1.4 | Ship! Sea! Kraken!
If it wasn't obvious already, Ship! Sea! Kraken! is based of Rock, Paper, Scissors. The hand gestures are really simple! The ship is an open palm held vertically (like the sail of a ship), the sea is an open palm facing down (like paper from rock, paper, scissors), and the kraken is strange, the palm faces downwards and all fingers point to the ground as if they were the tentacles of a kraken.
