8-year-old Katie Lynn sat in class, impatiently waiting for the bell to ring. She had had enough of math, science, and every other subject for one day. All she wanted to do was to go home and just sit in front of the TV, watching her favorite show-Winx Club. The finale of season 6 was airing that day, and Katie wasn't looking forward to missing it.
She excitedly watched the clock tick down the seconds 'till 2:30. When school finally ended for the day, she rejoiced and hopped out of her seat. After grabbing her backpack, she merrily skipped out the classroom and off the school grounds. Then she dashed home as fast as she could. Winx Club would begin in just fifteen minutes, so there was no time to just walk home. To her surprise, she arrived in just under a minute.
As Katie walked inside she was greeted by her mother, who was in the kitchen washing some dishes. "Welcome back, sweetie! How was your day?"
"It was fine," Katie replied and tossed her backpack aside. She walked into the main room and plopped down on the couch. Her mother had already turned the TV on and switched to the channel that Winx Club would be airing on. Katie thanked her and anxiously waited for the show to begin.
"Don't forget to do your homework after-" Her mother stopped abruptly.
"What's wrong?" Katie turned to look at her. She gasped and stared in shock. Her mother's eyes were open wide and her mouth agape. Suddenly her arms and legs became limp and she collapsed on the hard kitchen floor.
"Mom!" Katie cried and ran over to the unconscious woman.
She took her mother by the shoulders and shook her in vain, trying to wake her up. After the attempt failed she laid her mom flat so that her stomach was lying against the floor. Then she saw it.
Stuck deep into Katie's mother's back was a silver dagger. She had been stabbed. When Katie saw it and the blood pouring out from the large wound she almost forgot to breathe. She tried to scream but she was so frightened that no sound came out at all.
"Who did this?" Katie managed to say as the tears came, slightly blurring her vision.
Suddenly she heard an evil chuckle from behind her. Turning around, she saw a cloaked figure, and they were wielding a dagger in their left hand.
"So it's you, then," said the mysterious being. The voice of this cloaked figure was very feminine, which made Katie realize that her mother's killer was indeed a woman.
"I can't believe that the power I've been looking for is carried within a third grader!" the cloaked figure sighed. "Well then, this should be easier than I anticipated."
With extreme fear bubbling within her, Katie scrambled to her feet and proceeded to run. But the woman beneath the cloak was faster. She grabbed the little girl by the arm before she could reach the front door, and dragged her back into the kitchen. The cloaked woman then pinned her to the wall.
"I'm going to ask you nicely now," she said, her violet irises glowing amidst the shadow that the cloak cast upon her face. "Hand over the Crystal Flame or I'll have to use force."
In an instant, loads and loads of questions stirred through Katie's mind. I have powers? She thought. What is even going on? Crystal Flame? I thought I was just a normal girl!
Fear and panic rose within her as she felt a burning sensation in her chest. It felt as if the power that she unknowingly had within her was beginning be torn away from her. Katie acted upon instinct and tried to resist.
