calum sits with his parents and sister at the dinner table stuffing his face with his mother's homemade mashed potatoes. both parents work at the same company and they had a short day today so they got home three hours before their usual times.

"so, calum, my son who i never see, how's life?" calum's mother, joy, jokes.

calum lets out a short laugh. "it's okay. i'm on my third kid, just put a down payment on a new house. all's good."

joy laughs sarcastically and playfully shoves her son.

calum loves his mom and older sister, mali-koa, to death. they've given him nothing but love and respect his whole life. his father, david, however, is a lot more difficult to talk to; calum tries sometimes and it's like talking to a frying pan.

david takes a bite out of a chunk of garlic bread and swallows before speaking. "you finished that essay for english class yet, calum, or are you too busy playing around with that little girlfriend of yours?"

"calum and rachel broke up, dad, remember? not that we expect you to pay any attention," mali spits.

joy glares at mali and david who both just shrug as if saying "i didn't do anything."

"um, no, i haven't finished the essay. it's due in two weeks," calum answers anyway, mumbling. calum looks down at his plate as he pushes his chicken parmesan around with a fork.

dave always somehow makes calum feel like the bottom of a shoe, which is one of the reasons he wouldn't dare tell his parents he's gay. another reason being, he just admitted it to himself only a few days ago.

the doorbell is heard through the large house and calum doesn't look up until he hears joy say "who could be at the door at almost seven pm?" and calum is brought out of his trance. he forgot luke is supposed to be coming over today to work on the assignment.

"i'll get it," calum says before standing from the table and walking towards the front door.

he pulls the door open and is met with a grinning luke on the other side in basketball shorts and a simple t-shirt, an outfit similar to what calum has on except calum is wearing sweatpants.

"hi," luke says in his soft and friendly voice that instantly brings a smile to calum's face.

"hey. i forgot you were coming today."

"nice to see you, too," luke smiles sweetly and brushes passed calum into the home for the first time.

"hello," joy says, walking into the living room with a friendly expression as calum is closing the door behind luke.

"hi, mrs. hood, it's nice to meet you. i'm luke. calum and i are working on a school project together."

"oh alright," joy says, "we're almost done with dinner, would you like to join us? there's plenty to go around."

luke smiles widely, "i'd love to," he says and sets his backpack on the living room sofa.

joy nods and walks away to get another table setting and luke turns to calum who is just staring at the younger boy. luke walks ahead and turns back to calum once again before motioning for him to follow and calum does.

the two walk into the dining room where joy just finished scooping a pile of food on a plate for luke and pouring him a glass of soda. luke takes a seat next to where he sees calum's plate is after thanking joy for the food.
