"I'm going home for the evening." She began to untie her apron. "I'll see you guys later."
"Have a great night, girl!" Her co-worker shouted.
"I will." She replied and hurried from the bakery.
As Emily walked down the street, she pulled her red hair down from its ponytail. She smiled as the wind whipped around her as if it were greeting her. It was one of the rare, cool autumn days in Littleton, Colorado. She sighed at the sight of a happy couple and their baby. She tried to distract herself by putting in her headphones and pulling out her notepad.
"What do I need to get?" She muttered aloud and sat down on a bench. "I have eggs....I need milk and some fruit. Apples and peaches sound good..."
She ignored the odd looks she got from random people and continued to write down what she needed. When she finished the list, she walked a few blocks and to the Safeway. She only grabbed a basket that she could carry, seeing as she only needed a few items. When she walked over to the fruit, she noticed a lady having some trouble. Her two toddlers were throwing a fit and the mother looked throughly embarrassed.
"Need some help, ma'am?" Emily approached her with a kind smile.
"Yes." The woman managed an embarrassed smile. "I'm looking for the baby clothes."
"Three isles down from here." Emily pointed towards the other end of the store.
"Thank you!" She replied and hurried in that direction.
'And people wonder why I hate children...' Emily thought and continued her quest.
As she was heading to the hair products, she caught a glimpse of herself in a mirror attached to a glasses shelf. Her crimson hair rolled down her back and just barely touched her elbows. Her chocolate eyes glimmered and stood out against her white jeans and purple t-shirt.
She shook off the image of herself and grabbed a pack of multicolored hairties. Emily hummed idily to a song that was stuck in her head and walked towards the produce. When she spotted the apples, she got a goofy grin on her face. She walked over and grabbed a plastic bag.
"Cool." Emily started to place apples in her plastic bag. "They have Gala apples."
"Red Delicious are the best apples."
She turned around to see a thin guy looking at her. He had piercing blue eyes and a red baseball cap. He was started to bag his own apples, but also keeping an eye on his overflowing cart. When a box of cereal started to fall, Emily rushed over to it and caught it.
"Fruity Pebbles?" She raised an eyebrow.
"They're for a friend." His face took a very sweet shade of red. "So, what's your name?"
"Emily." She offered a hand for him to shake.
"Cool." He took it. "I'm Jordan."
"Is there any reason you're buying out the whole store?" She joked, twisting her back shut. "For a party or something?"
"Oh, it's kinda difficult to explain." He chuckled. "Have you ever been on Youtube?"
"Who hasn't?" She chuckled.
"Well," He continued. "Have you ever watched videos by The Creatures? Nova, DanzNews, Spoon?"
"Nova sounds familiar." Emily glanced at him.
"Well," He gave her a smile. "I'm known by Kootra. We make video game videos for a living. We're planning on doing a collab all through the weekend. Food something we can't go without."
"That's awesome." Her own smile had grown into a grin. "So, how many of you are there?"
"Nova, Kootra, Dan, Spoon, Sly and Ze."
They turned to see someone else with a big cart. At first, she couldn't see the person on the other side of the cart. However, he stepped over to Jordan and he became visible. A black hoodie almost blocked his short, black hair and brown eyes from her view.
"I'm Nova," The stranger spoke, almost as if he was nervous. "Or James. Depending on what you prefer."
"I've seen you around Youtube, I think." Emily's smile faded at his strange behavior. "Well, I should probably go. I've got a friend waiting on some food."
"Oh, alright." Jordan frowned. "Hopefully we'll see you later."
"Yeah." She gave them a short wave before scampering away.
James' Point of View
"She looked like I scared her." I said. "I've never seen someone walk that fast."
"I have." Jordan smiled.
"Where?" I snorted. "The Olympics?"
"Prop Hunt." Jordan said.
We practically laughed our way to the check-out line. However, my own laughter died as the other guys approached. I turned towards the door and saw the girl heading outside. We made brief eye contact, her chocolate eyes burning into mine. She was oddly skittish, which made me even more curious. What was wrong with her? Did Jordan say something that was offensive? Did I say something offensive?
"Hey," I looked at Jordan. "Did you catch her name?"
"Yeah," Jordan tossed a box of corn dogs onto the belt. "It was Emily, I think."
"Emily..." I muttered and began to help the others unload our food.
Narrator
It had been a very long time since she had actually talked to a guy like that. Not counting the male customers at the bakery. She was so shaken up from the incident, that she sprinted home with the groceries. When she stepped inside, she was greeted by her friend Alison.
"Hey!" Allison had a happy smile on her face.
"Hey." Emily replied and set her things down.
"You alright?" Allison looked at her and the smile on her face faded.
"I'm fine." Emily sighed. "I just....I just ran into a few guys at the store."
"They didn't give you any trouble, did they?" Her friend looked concerned.
"No." Emily said. "I just feel like a total ass-hat for being so rude to them and not even keeping a good conversation. I hate men."
"I agree!" Allison laughed and then her face got serious again. "Listen, if you ever want to talk to someone, I'm always gonna be here. You know that, right?"
"Yeah." Emily nodded.
"Good." Allison looked at the groceries. "You up for a grilled cheese sandwich? I'm fuckin' hungry!"
