Chapter 5
Sanders led the boy to the hospital bed where he picked him up and placed him on the clean white but rumpled sheets. The doctors looked on in awe on what was going on right in front of them. They had tried so many times to get the boy to land but nothing had worked, if anything if forced the boy to fly higher. And there stood this man in uniform who only had to use his voice to encourage the boy to put his feet back on the ground.
The head doctor stepped out from the circle of nurses and staff and slowly approached the bed. Unfortunately the boy saw this movement as a threat and shifted immediately into a defensive position. Sanders saw this and placed firm hands on the boys shoulders to ground the boy and provide comfort. This brought the boy's attention back to Sanders and his muscles loosened as if trying to relax. Sanders decided that the best course of action would be to speak to the boy and attempt to keep him calm even if the boy could not understand his words.
"That man is a doctor", Sanders starts, "He is not going to hurt you. He is only going to see if you are injured anywhere else. Don't worry I'll be right here the whole time".
Miraculously the boy seemed to understand what he was saying and nodded his head. Sanders was shocked. At first he thought the boy could not communicate but recent events proved otherwise. What else did the boy know? Sanders wondered why the boy didn't speak when he was in the cage but only made animal noises.
The doctor once again approached the bed and was surprised to see that the boy stayed where he was told. The boy seemed so much calmer around Sanders and the doctor only hoped it stay that way. The doctor whose name plate read 'Dr. Charles Turner' first checked the outward appearance of the boy. He took down notes on the amount of bruises and where, the. Checked for any areas with torn or scared flesh and jotted down any areas that seemed to have dried or fresh blood.
The boy did not like the man staring at him. He did not like it one bit but allowed it because his safe man had explained what was happening and did not leave his side. After the doctor sent the other hospital staff away he let the doctor inspect some of the wounds with his hands but could not hide the hitch in breath every time he was touched.
All was going decently till Dr. Turner removed a needle from his pocket. He only wanted to take a blood sample to test for any diseases or issues but the boy was terrified. Sanders quickly grabbed the boy around the waist and drew him close to his body. He could feel the boy trembling against him but gently urged the boys head onto the nape of his neck and started to rub calming circles on the boys back.
Sanders spoke in a low gentle tone, "It's okay, he's only going to take your blood for now. It's not gonna hurt so bad just a little pinch. Everyone goes through it, even me. I won't let him do anything else to you alright?", Sanders whispered to the boy's ear and the boy have a curt nod.
The doctor carefully grabbed the boys arm and prepared it for the needle. He cleaned the skin thoroughly with a disinfectant wipe and slid the needle into the boy's arm. The doctor found it hard to ignore the other needle marks already there and silently concluded why the boy was so scared of injections. Who knows what was put into him before?
As soon as the needle pierced the skin the boy squealed and grabbed the front of Sanders shirt in a tight fist, burying his head further into the mans neck deeply inhaling the scent there. Sanders's heart went out to the boy. He could only imagine the painful memories the needle brought up. He continued to run the his hand up and down the spine of the boys back sometimes reaching up to the boys head and soothing the muscles in the neck.
As the doctor was pulling the syringe filled with blood out and away from the boys arm he looked to Sanders waiting for Sanders nod of approval before continuing with the next needle. Sanders pulled away from the boy and looked deep into his eyes saying, "The doctor is going to give you a different shot soon. This one will make you sleepy but will also make the next test less painful". He paused waiting for a response from the boy but received none. " I will be with you through all of them and even when you wake up. Is that okay?". The boy nodded solemnly, mentally preparing himself for the next needle.
The doctor quickly but carefully grabbed the next needle and pushed it into the boy's arm, administering the drug. He tried to make it as painless and comfortable as possible bit knew he could not totally succeed. Sanders took the arms that was injected into and rubbed the sore spot where the needles were placed. After seven minutes of silence with the only sound coming from the three people breathing the boys eyes began to droop. The big tried to fight the drug but with the gentle hand rubbing his back once again and the sound of his safe mans heart beating, it was no use. With a shuddering sigh the boy slipped into a dreamless sleep.
