THE ANCIENT GUARDIANS

Chapter 15

Tss!' "OW!" I suddenly woke up to see Marla over my head, who had dropped some water on my arm. "That's freezing!"

"Stop sleeping for once, we can go outside. Ponytail's already gone up." And she left the room.

I got up from my coal-bed and drowsily stepped out of my room, towards the hole. Clint was still going through the bookshelves. I looked up the hole and saw that Marla was already up. She looked down at me. "How'd you get up there?" I asked her.

"There's a ladder on the side." She answered.

How did I miss that? I climbed outside and as soon as I stood up I had to duck to dodge William that was diving in my direction. He swooped back up and kept flying in the area, letting out whoops of joy every now and then. Although it was night, an almost full moon shined bright and lit up the plains, with the occasional pair of white wings passing.

"It's really nice out here." Marla said. "Haven't had fresh air in a while."

I couldn't stop looking at Marla. Her blue hair sparkled with the light, her eyes were radiant, topped off with her pointy ears she really seemed unreal, like a fantasy. "Yeah...nice." I said distractingly.

She turned her gaze to me, a questioning look in her eyes. "What are you looking at?"

I snapped out of it. "Oh, it's just that...your hair's sparkling."

She grabbed a lock of her hair and looked at it sparkle. "What do you know, that's a nice feature. I wonder if it gives frost resistance too."

"We're not in an RPG, Marla. Although it probably does resist frost."

"I just like to give attributes to real life things as if we were." She told me. "Don't be so boring and let's go sit against that rock over there."

I followed Marla to the rock and sat down beside her. There was a moment of silence.

Marla broke the silence. "When I met you at the party this was NOT where I imagined us going."

"I didn't think you'd be the Guardian of Water. Apart from your eyes you didn't have any sign of having the power." I told her.

"Is it too late to mention I was a champion swimmer?"

"It's a little too late. But it's nice to know."

"Anything else you'd like to know then?" She asked.

"How are you dealing with leaving your family?"

"I'm glad I'm gone from that place. It's not because my parents are mean or anything. My father's a paranoid conformist and my mother always wished I was more of a girly girl. What I'm missing out on is my father thinking I do everything to piss him off and being a disappointment. I'd much rather be here...with you. Not to mention kicking undead ass."

I never thought that Marla's family life would be this bad. Usually women are always close to their parents. Just then I noticed Marla's hand about to touch mine. I panicked for a second and quickly moved my hand away.

Marla looked at me. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing." I said. "It's not that I don't like you or don't appreciate the gesture. I would've done it myself if not for the reason why I took my hand away."

"Which would be...?"

"It's just a really bad idea, considering the difference in our body temperatures. There's just no way I could hold your freezing hand, or that you could hold my burning hand."
