THE ANCIENT GUARDIANS
Chapter 13
“There’s just one problem, though. How do we get out?” I pointed out.
“That’s easy.” Clint said, pointing upward. “Through the rabbit hole.”
We looked up and saw a giant hole in the ceiling. I was wondering why the darkness here was less intense.
“How are we going to get up there?” William asked.
“Even easier.” Clint continued. “Just stand in the circle and hold on.”
Then, we noticed that Clint was standing in a circle that clearly hadn’t been there before. We all stepped in it and, when we stopped moving, the ground suddenly shot up in the air towards the hole in the ceiling. At first it moved fast and the light of day shined more and more, but when we got near the surface it slowed down. The sight of the plains was magnificent, the horizon so far…I just felt like running and jumping all over the place since there was so much space.
William looked even more nostalgic than I did. He suddenly took off his coat and threw it aside, spreading his wings as if stretching when waking up. They were just as stunning as the first time I saw them.
Marla was actually seeing them for the first time. “That’s not fair! How come only you have wings?"
“I don’t care. I’m just going to fly right now.” Will continued.
“Hold it.” Clint interrupted. “You can’t just do whatever you want; we’re still escaping, in case you hadn’t noticed.”
“Didn’t we already escape?” I asked.
“We’re definitely being searched for at the moment.” Clint said. “Although, the enemy is preemptive, not desperate. By tonight the search should be over.”
“But we’re really exposed here.” Will pointed out.
Clint started moving forward. We followed him silently. “None of you can notice this,” he started saying. “but this is a particular area of the plains where the ground is impenetrable in every way, even from me.” He stopped at a specific point and looked down. “Except for here.”
There was a circle in the ground beside Clint. “Why here?” I asked.
Clint closed his eyes. “If you close your eyes, you’ll see this piece of the ground glowing white.” He answered.
I closed my eyes, same as the others. The circle in the ground really was glowing white. At the same time, I took a moment to look for firelight. Apart from the white circle, there was nothing; the plains were absolutely deserted.
We opened our eyes when Clint started talking again. “Now, put your hand on the circle.” Then he bent down and laid his open palm on the circle. A small orange-brown symbol of Earth shined on the back of his hand.
We each imitated him. On each off our hands glowed the symbol of our elements; Water, Wind and Fire. The circle under our hands physically glowed white this time, becoming so bright as to blind us. Suddenly, the feeling of the ground vanished, the light dissipated, and all that was left was a hole where the circle had been. It was just like when the cave entrance had become a wall after I had entered it.
