THE ANCIENT GUARDIANS

Chapter 5

The rest of the day was quite boring, I figured it couldn't get worse when Clint brought out a pack of cards and asked to play Bridge. Finally it was time to meet with my brother. Clint gave me one of those big cloaks with a hood (I don't know where he sprouts them from) to put over my unusual clothes and some sunglasses. I looked like some drug dealer that was hiding something. "Why don't the sunglasses or the hood melt on my face?" I asked.

"It's because it's only your heart that generates that heat. Your head is far enough from it so that it doesn't burn anything you put on it. There's something I'm wondering about though." Clint said.

            "What is it?"

"Well, now that your body temperature is so high, how can you ever get any fever? And if you can, does it make a difference?"

"...If I notice anything, I'll let you know. Hey, you have any shoes?"

"I don't have any spare shoes, I'd have to lend you mine. But it's not a good idea."

"Why not? I thought you said there was no heat far from my heart."

"I didn't say there was no heat, I said it's not hot enough to burn or melt anything. The rest of your body isn't boiling but it's still very hot. It'd be like putting my shoes in a micro-wave, and with all the rubber and fabric, it's not going to smell nice."

"You're saying I'll have to walk barefoot EVERYWHERE?"

"Oh you'll be fine. It's not like you can get cold feet right?" He got me there.

I went to the park on foot (barefoot actually), it wasn't that far. I spotted my brother's old rusty car and walked clumsily to it, the rocks being such pains. I knocked on the window and he unlocked the door. When I got in he looked at me quizzically, so I guessed what he was thinking. "I have to wear this so no one recognizes me."

            "Right, so what happened?"

It was hard not to tell him what really happened. "I can't say much..."

"Hold on. Are you barefoot?! In my car!?"

"I...lost my shoes. Anyway, I was involved in something top secret. And since I became 'threatened' they're relocating me somewhere. I don't know where so don't ask."

"So that's it then? I can never see you or your bare feet again and I can't even know why? By the way, is it me or is it suddenly hot in here?"

I just couldn't keep the truth from him, it wasn't fair for him. "Alright, I'll tell you what really happened." He just kept looking at me (and my feet), not saying anything. "There's no top secret thing or anything of the sort. Apparently I became an 'Ancient Guardian'." And so I told him everything. I even showed him my new snapping trick, my red hair and my red eyes, hoping he'd believe me.

"I don't know..." he said "Sounds like I could read that in a book."

"I know, right? But you can't tell anyone about this; it has got to be kept secret."

"Your face is really badass though! It's amazing! Although those sunglasses aren't very good looking. Here, try mine." And he gave me his pair of sunglasses.

I couldn't believe it. He believed me. And he was taking it pretty well. I put his sunglasses on; they looked a lot better than the ones Clint gave me.

"Cool, they look good on you." Joe said. "Keep them; I'll buy myself a new pair. I wish I could have red eyes like yours, they're really cool."
