A little boy that was aged five
Had seen a girl with pale blue eyes
At once enamoured with the colour,
The colour of the summer skiesHis hand went out to reach for hers
And hers went out to reach for his
Before their hands could come in contact
An adult broke their childhood blissHer mother swooped down like a falcon
And snatched the little girl away
And then the boy, taken aback,
Just only barely heard her say"Don't touch this boy, for he is black
You silly girl why can't you see?
You cannot be friends with someone
Who's not at all like you or me"And as he watched her walk away
He saw her wanting to turn back
But the universe decided
To segregate the white from blackAnd as he prayed upon the stars
Every single lonely night
He couldn't help but start to realise
That even they had glowed in whiteAnd as he stumbled on through life
Hurt by the colour of his skin
He didn't even seem to realise
The pure white heart he had withinAnd then, one day, he saw a girl
It didn't take him long to realise
It was the girl that haunted him
With summer skies inside her eyesHe approached and flashed a grin
And saw her lips return his smile
The smile that he would see in church
As she starts walking down the isleThe girl had looked within his eyes
And had seen deeper than his skin
The only colour that should matter:
The colour of the soul within.
