I woke up, somebody shaking me on my shoulder. Panicking, I grabbed their wrist, flipped them over me onto their back, and looked down at them.
"Is this karma for the falling for me jokes?" Saeko joked, wincing a little. Backing off, I helped her to her feet, calling myself a idiot all the while. "Everyone else went ahead, and it seems Katya's in charge." Saeko remarked, running her right shoulder. "They left about five minutes ago. Alice is practically glued to Katya right now, just gaping at her hair." Laughing, I turned and saw my guns against the wall I was sleeping on. "Shizuka got tired of carrying them, and its probably better that we carry them now, considering that we're outside now." Grabbing my guns, I muttered a distracted response, looking at the revolver, which sat in the dying light with its short, black barrel gleaming. Snatching it up, I checked the chambers and saw it was fully loaded. "Quin? Are you OK?" Saeko asked me, putting one hand on my shoulder. I jumped, then looked at her, hoping she didn't see the way I held the gun."Y...Yeah.. I'm good." I said, shaking my head to clear away the thoughts.
"Quin... When you were gone, I was thinking... what if we find a place to settle down?" I looked at her, slipping the gun away and starting to walk forwards. "You mean a family." I stated, catching her hint. She nodded, keeping up with my long stride easily. "Wouldn't it be nice?" I shook my head. "Maybe you think so, Sae. But right now, one kid is our top priority. Right now, bringing kids into the shit hole we live in right now, isn't exactly the best of options." Saeko opened her mouth, but I silenced her with a glare. "Do you really want to have some infant crawling around, thinking zombies are normal? Put a pin in it, Saeko. Maybe if we settle down, but right now, I need somebody who I can trust to fight and talk to when I need it the most, not somebody who is defenseless against the first threat to show its face. Am I clear?" I leaned in, hating myself, but never breaking eye contact. Before she could move, I filled the gap, and gave her a quick kiss, then turning back around. "I'm sorry for being like this, but I got a lot of stuff on my shoulders, and I can't worry about lord knows how many little ones added to the list." I also can't have a repeat if this morning and with Tomeao. I just can't. I thought, drawing my katana and walked, Saeko shuffling behind, katana and head hung low.
Later
"Well its about time!" Victor said, running his hand over his stomach. "You got back just in time for dinner!" We had found our group going out in a old market, the aisles cleared out a long time ago. "Quinton!" Alice squealed, and tackled me, her sunglasses on a make shift lanyard. "Who got this for you, Strawberry top?" I asked, making her laugh. "Mr.Hirano made it for me from a old wire. Isn't he cool?" I nodded, looking at him with a face of gratitude. "Hey Quin? Can I speak to you in private?" Katya said, sounding pissed. Following her back to the deli, I was stopped by a vicious kick to the back of my leg, and shoved into the counter. "What the hell has gotten into you?" Katya hissed, grabbing my tank top, and pulling me down to her level. "I just talked to Saeko, and she told me what you two discussed. You must be a bigger baka than I thought if you're snapping on her."
Breaking her grip gently, I stood to my full height, and loomed over her. "I spoke the truth, KittyKat. You know damn well as I do that bringing a kid would be insane!" Shaking her head, she pointed out to the others. "Its not about reason! Its about making sure we are happy. You can't push people away like this. This isn't like Tomeao... its about us now. Can you tell me that you can make it up to her?" Looking out, I saw Saeko in her school top, black skirt that went to mid thigh, and long black boots, sitting by the firelight, and felt my heart lurch. "I can try." I muttered. Satisfied, Katya started to walk away, but I grabbed her arm. "Take this." I begged, handing her the .38 special. "Every time I see this, I think of the Dons words. About this being a way out. I don't want that. If I die, I want it to be by another person's hand. Would you just spare me that one request?" Katya looked scared, but then nodded, setting her face in a determined look. "Thank you." I said, walking away to join the group for dinner. Later, after a full meal, we put the fire out, and curled up by the coals, enjoying the warmth as we laid in sleeping bags or on blankets. I was half way asleep, when Saeko and Alice crept over to lay with me. Saeko tried to tuck herself close to me, but I stiffened my body, not allowing her to put a arm around me. Feeling her just lay her arm across my chest, I drifted off, muttering apologies a I sunk into the blackness of sleep, realizing that I was back to square one, not only with the girl I loved, but with the rest of my group. "Shit." I whispered as I flopped my head down, giving in to sleep.
