Walking over to the pit, Katya and I stopped, looking around. "Where is that Victor kid?" She asked, checking behind a rock. "I really don't know." I turned to the pit, and gasped. "Oh shit." Katya slid up beside me, and gasped. "What the fuck is he doing?" She hissed, pointing at victor, who stood motionless in the middle of the mass. "Shhh. Don't disturb him." I said, aiming the flashlight at him. I saw as the beam climbed up, he had already taken out a good portion of them, but that's not what frightened me. When I reached his face, I saw that half of it was covered in a mask, a zipper going across the mouth. "Why does he have that mask on? I think I saw that on a episode of Tokyo Ghoul."
Ignoring her, I heard Victor starting to laugh, his voice growing in volume, and echoing through the caves. "Is.. Is he OK?" She asked, backing up. "I honestly don't know anymore." I said, jumping down to help, drawing my katana as I slid. Cutting through the horde with a cold fury, I made it to Victor, and tackled him seconds before he was lunch. I heard Katya leap over my head, taking down the zeke with a well placed kick to the knees, then curb stomping it with the heel of her foot. "Finish these things!" I yelled, picking Victor over my shoulder. "I'm taking him to the slope!" Cutting back in a slow, but steady retreat, Katya cut down any zombie in our way, while I managed to defend myself with one hand holding the katana, clearing out the sides of us. Reaching the slope, I set victor lightly against it,easing his head to lean against the wall. "Victor! Snap out of what ever crazy ass mindscape you're in, and help us, god damn you!" I slapped Victor hard, snapping his head to the left. Looking briefly behind me,I saw Katya was in trouble. "Ah, shit!" I yelled,as I swung my katana into the body of a particularly muscular zombie that had gotten too close to Katya's long hair, his lack of fat allowing me to slice right below his ribcage, and into his spine. Withdrawing the blade, I then shoved it back in, but now, I shoved it into the thing's gaping mouth, silencing it's awful moan.
Pulling the now black blade out, I flicked it twice, getting rid of the slime that it carried. "Quin?" Victor's voice said, snapping me out of my trance. "What... What happened?" "You went AWOL! That's exactly what happened! This isn't a joke, man. I need to know if I can trust you to not pull any stunts like this again! Am I clear?" I said, whipping his mask off over his head. "Yea. Yea, I can handle that." He said, taking his mask and rising to his feet. Nodding, I turned to Katya, who was huffing and panting. "Just like Iwo Jima, right?" She said, glaring at me. I raised my palms, keeping her back. "Hey. Iwo Jima had way less people when we ran the gauntlet." I edged around her, flicking the black ooze off of the blade of my weapon, then sheathing it without a sound. "It may have been easy for you, since you're so short, but I had to actually fight, since everyone decided to attack me after you took out one guy."
Katya struck me in my gut, but not knocking the wind out of me. "Keep talking, bean pole. Just keep talking." Shaking my head, I walked over to the mine cart, and peered past it, flashlight aimed at the darkness. I thought I saw a glint in the darkness, and upon closer inspection, saw it was a door handle. "Got a thing here!" I yelled, grabbing the door handle. Heaving my weight back as I pulled back, I snapped the door open, causing daylight to flood in. "No freaking way." Katya gasped, supporting Victor as they walked over. "Victor, stay here, and rest. Katnap... get the others and get them here safely. Take my flashlight to guide your way back. I'm gonna keep guard here." Katya nodded, catching the field torch I threw to her. "Don't run off on me, McAuliffe. You got us this far, now let us lead you into the light for once." I couldn't help smiling as she rushed away, her hair flying behind her.
Sitting down, I checked victor for any wounds, and found none, miraculously. "Nice little group you got here, big man." Victor commented, stretching his arms out. "Good group chemistry. Even that Katya girl knows it. How long have you been taking the leader role?" "About three to four weeks ago." I said, remembering that day when Quinton, the American, Quinton the outsider died, and Quinton the fighter rose from the depths of being alone. "Remind me later, Victor, that I need to tell everyone something important." He nodded, looking back into the darkness. "No problem. Just make sure you can fill me in on any missing details." I nodded, then leaned against the wall, dozing off as I waited.
