The whole car ride to the McGreggor house no word was spoken. Not from me nor from Toby. I was so nervous I didn't really know how to come up with something to say, I mean what was I supposed to say. Nice we finally get to see our son after almost nine years? No I can't say something like that. The closer we got the more I started to doubt. Can we even do this? "Toby can we even do this?" I finally spoke. "They never said we couldn't." I wish I could remember the arrangement we made with the McGreggor family because the way Toby explained it didn't make any sense to me. So I just rested my head against the car window. I was so tired.
I fell asleep. Toby woke me when we were less than a mile away from the McGreggor house. I gussied up a bit so I didn't look like a complete mess. "Toby?" I asked. "Yeah?" I paused for a second. "Do you think he'll be mad at us?" I said. "I don't know Spencer, I guess we'll find out soon enough." We both sighed.
You have arrived at your destination
I looked at Toby and reached for his hand. "Here goes nothing." He said. He gave my hand a little squeeze and got out of the car. As soon as he got to me our hands got together again. "We can do this." He said and I gave him a faint smile. Toby knocked on the front door of the small one-floor house. An old lady in a wheelchair opened the door. She gave us a smile and said, "Mr. And Mrs. Cavanaugh? He's been waiting for you to come and see him." Toby and I looked at eachother in confusion and follow the women who rolled towards the living. "Nathaniel! They're here!" A little boy who, looked so much like Toby, came running in the room. He hesitated when he saw us. He gulped and whispered "Mom? Dad?" A tear escaped my eye corner and I nodded. Nathaniel ran up to me and hugged me tightly. "I've been waiting for you." he whispered sweetly. I sobbed when he let go of me to hug Toby.Toby's POV
"Yes it was really tragic, Nathaniel was almost 3." The women, Rosalie, told us about the accident that killed Nathaniel's adoptive parents. "That's horrible." Spencer said while Nathaniel sat on her lap. "Yes it's terrible, the upbringing of Nathaniel has been hard, a full time job and there's no break ever. A day off is not in it for me, though I would really like to have one. "But we could look after him if you ever want a day off." I said. "Really? That'd be great. I'd love to but, he's almost nine I think he can decide for himself if he wants to." Rose said. "Would you like that Nathaniel?" Spencer asked while playing with his hands. He nodded smiling. "Here let me give you my number and I will call you." Rose said. She wheeled to the kitchen en wrote in down. "It'll be Nathaniel's Birthday in 8 days," Rose said while wheeling back. "Maybe you'd like to come? and bring your other two too." She finished smiling. "Yeah that'd be great." I said when I took the note Rose handed me.
