I began walking down the hall with Peter by my side. He seemed oddly unfocused. I glanced at him, and got an off sort of regretful, sad vibe. It's hard to explain how these things feel exactly...if I study him I can feel the force pressing against my chest and squeezing my gut, just as if I was feeling these emotions. But as soon as I would look away, it would disappear.
I slowed my pace. "Hey..."
He stopped and looked at me.
"What's bothering you?."
He pressed his lips together, sighing and looking away uncomfortably. "It-nothing. It's nothing." He began to continue down the hall.
I remembered how he seemed zoned out back in Couslon's office. It had started right when Skye pulled up the wrong file. I caught up to him by jogging a few steps.
"Peter...you, you know you can tell me."
He stopped and glanced back at me again.
I shrugged. "It's either that or I figure out on my own."
He rolled his eyes slightly and looked away again. "Nothing...it's just...that file? The one Skye pulled up?"
I nodded. Of course I was right.
"I read a little of it. That guy...he was an asset for hydra. It mentioned possibilities of brainwashing," he continued.
My heart fell a little bit. I could feel his guilt.
"That would've been me, you know. An asset for Hydra. Who knows, they probably would've brainwashed me too." He paused, running a hand through his hair. "But I got out. I was lucky."
I opened my mouth, but I couldn't seem to grasp the words. "That...none of that's your fault. No one even knew about Hydra until they took down SHIELD."
"I know...it's just..." He sighed.
"That's why we're here. To prevent that from happening to anyone. Ever. You can protect yourself. He couldn't. You're powerful, and you can make a difference. I...I can't," I said.
"You were powerful enough to get me out then. Probably even more so now," he replied.
I shook my head. "I...I don't really know what," I gestured to my head. "What this is, or what I can do...it fluctuates, it changes. Sometimes for the worse. But my only job now is learning how to control it."
He laughed a little. "I could say the same, quite honestly."
I started back down the hall again. "Why do you say that?"
He lifted his hand in front of him and outstretched his palm. A little ball of light materialized above his hand, rotating and growing in size. Suddenly it flickered and disappeared, leaving behind a small wisp of heat. He shrugged. "I'm still a little oblivious as to how it works...exactly."
I smiled, stopping at a door on my left, pushing it open. "Well, maybe they can help."
I stepped into a new and improved lab...much bigger than the one on the bus. More tables, computers and equipment. I saw Fitz sitting in front of a computer at one of the tables. He glanced at me and smiled a bit, but looked slightly confused when he saw Peter walk in behind me.
"Lucy!," he said standing up and walking towards me. "Um...are you..." He stuttered, pointing at Peter.
"He's fine," I said.
He looked instantly relieved. "Oh..okay..." He wrapped his arms around me and I returned the hug. "It's good to see you, Lucy." He glanced behind me. "You too."
Peter smiled and nodded.
I looked Fitz up and down. He had grown some facial hair. He looked a lot older now. I looked at his face and was suddenly hit with something drastically different about his presence. I studied his face, confused about what had changed.
He looked at me confused for a few moments, and I shook my head. "Um..where's...where's Simmons?".
"Oh, uh, Jemma's in the back studying some samples. I'll go get her," he said, turning promptly and walking away.
I studied him as he walked. Something about the way he spoke, how he walked...his eyes even seemed duller, in a way...I don't know....
"What...." I muttered to myself.
"What is it?," I heard Peter say.
I glanced at him and shook my head, looking back at Fitz as he disappeared. "I....I don't know."
"Did...did you, I don't know, sense something?," he said, taking a few steps forward to stand beside me.
"Everyone on the team seems different...but him...he's way changed. Something happened. I don't know what," I replied.
Suddenly Fitz returned with Simmons trailing behind him. "Lucy!," she exclaimed, running towards me and wrapping her arms around me.
"It's good to see you Simmons," I said.
"You too," she replied. "Peter, you're looking well."
"I assume Coulson's briefed you on the mission?," Fitz asked.
"For the most part, yes," I replied.
"Excellent," Simmons said. "While you're here, I might as well do your routine eval. It's required for anyone going out in the field."
I shrugged. "Alright."
She began to walk back in the direction she came, but she stopped and turned. "You too," she said, pointing at Peter.
He shrugged too and followed us across the lab. "Guess I can't argue."

Hey everyone, sorry for not updating in so long...it's been hard to find motivation. Short chapter I know, but this was the main part I was stuck on, so soon we'll be moving on with the action plot.
Also, I'd like to point out that I've been getting some minor hate on the prequel to this, the snapshot, with people commenting saying that something is not realistic or that wouldn't happen in real life or correcting me saying some abilities aren't special and are a real thing or something I don't really remember honestly
Just let me point out that this is a fanfiction and because it's a fanfiction its not going to be realistic. In fact, the entire show this is based on isn't realistic. It's fictional for a reason. Yeah it wouldn't happen in real life, but that's what makes it interesting. If it made it realistic, it'd be boring and I wouldn't have 15K reads. If you don't like the story then stop reading...I mean it's pretty simple. I created this because I was tired of reading fanfictions with romance as the main plot sequence. I like people with badass powers and action...not fluff. I mean unless it's Stucky...then I'll allow fluff. ANYWAYS
But since the majority of you do like and appreciate the story, I will continue to update as much as I possibly can. Thank you to the people who do support my writing and ilysm. I hope I don't disappoint and you continue to enjoy my story as much as I do.
xx
