Emily:
"And that class is why Charles Dickens's Great Expectations is a classic."

The bell to signal the end of my last lecture of the day finally rang and I've never been so relieved in my entire life. I just want to go home, get a beer, turn on the Yankees game and go to sleep.

"Okay guys don't forget your thesis on the topic of your choice is due in six days. I expect all of yours to graduate and receive you PHD this year." I say to my students as they prepare to leave.

"Oh and one more thing. This thesis is not something you can start the night before it's due and still expect to graduate. That is why you have been given the entire year. If anyone has any problems you can stop by my office and speak to me. Class dismissed."

As I was locking up my office one of my students ran up to me. "Professor I'm so sorry I missed your lecture today. My mom was brought back into the hospital and the doctor said it's back and I couldn't just leave her. I'm really sorry" she blurted out.

"It's okay Jess, you didn't miss anything new. I just explained Charles Dickens Great Expectations. I will email you the notes you missed." Her face told me that she hadn't slept in about two day and I worry about her. Her moms been sick for a while and she's pretty much in her own. She gave me a grateful smile and walked back the way she came. I turned the opposite direction and made my way home.

As I got home I placed my briefcase on the island in my kitchen and grabbed a beer from my fridge. I made my way to my bedroom and changed into sweatpants and my rangers shirt. I grabbed my beer, turned on the Yankees game and drank. This is what I've been doing for the past month and it's what I'm going to continue doing until I'm ready to open up to new people again.
