Sasuke knew it had been a mistake. Leaving his wallet at his table, completely abandoning it for anyone to take could have possibly been the dumbest thing that he had ever done. So why had he left his beloved piece of leather in the café, across the street and out of his protection? For the slim chance that you would bring it to him.
Naruto had first suggested the ludicrous idea as the two of them were finishing up their lunch. They'd arrived at the café over two hours earlier, just as most of their other coworkers were trailing back into the office buildings once their lunch breaks had concluded. Both knew that they had overstayed their welcome inside the cozy café, made clear by the impatient glances they received from each of the waitresses, all young and pretty. But no one told them to leave, so they didn't. Not until they were ready.
"Hey," Naruto said in a hushed voice from across the table just as Sasuke began to stand.
"What?" Sasuke asked in a slightly bitter tone. He already knew that Naruto was about to make a dumb suggestion, he could hear it in his voice. Frankly, he didn't feel like listening to any of Naruto's schemes right now, not after he realized that he had made no progress in getting closer to you. Sure, it was only his second day at Espress, and he wasn't exactly making an effort to woo you, but he was Sasuke Uchiha, dammit. He was used to woman pursuing him, not the other way around. He was almost certain that you would attempt to flirt with him, or offer him a chocolate danish, on the house. Or, even better, leave your phone number with the bill. But you did none of these, you barely even looked at him the entire time he was there. You gave him the cold shoulder, but smiled brightly to Naruto, who was admittedly much nicer to you, whenever he spoke to you. It made Sasuke furious and frustrated, but oh so intrigued. Which was why when Naruto suggested he 'accidently' forget his wallet, he didn't immediately dismiss the idea.
"What are you talking about, Uzumaki?" Sasuke asked, and lowered himself back onto the dining chair.
"Think about it, you leave your wallet at the table, we leave, (Y/N) comes to clean the table, she finds your wallet, and she finds you to give it back. Then you chat her up one-on-one, not in some noisy café, and you got your girl." He spoke enthusiastically while using wide hand gestures.
"Or someone steals my wallet." Sasuke scoffed. "What makes you so sure that she'll come after me? She'll probably just put it behind the counter and wait for me to come back for it."
"Well either she comes to you, or you have an excuse to come back here and talk to her," Naruto said smartly.
Sasuke contemplated this idea. He wasn't so much worried about losing his wallet since he was, well, Sasuke Uchiha. He was so well connected that if his wallet was ever truly lost, he could have it tracked and back in his hands in ten minutes flat. There was something holding him back from going through with this train-wreck of an idea, but he didn't know what. The risk? The stupidity? Maybe the utter moral humiliation that he was about to essentially 'lose' his wallet for the off chance that a woman, who he hadn't even had a real conversation with, would chase after him.
"What makes you think I'm even interested in her?" Sasuke asked defensively.
Naruto snorted. "I've known you since we were kids, I think I can tell when you like someone." He then grew a sly smirk, and said to Sasuke in a teasing tone, "Besides, you didn't immediately reject that you liked her when I first suggested it."
Sasuke huffed, but kept his hand on his wallet that was sitting safely in his pocket. After a second longer of questioning his life choices, he sighed in defeat and tossed his wallet back onto the table. After shifting a napkin over top of his wallet to hide it just slightly, the two men stood up, slipped on their suit jackets, and headed out the door.
Nearly an hour later, Sasuke sat in his office behind his large wooden desk, and thought about what a big mistake he had just made. He wondered when he should give up, and make the walk of shame back to the café and retrieve his wallet.¤¤¤
You felt unbelievably out of place inside the lobby of the monarchy building. Everyone was all briefcases, pencil skirts, and silk ties, while you stood awkwardly by the entrance door in a black muscle shirt, ripped cutoffs and a red flannel tied around your waist. You anxiously ran your fingers through your messy hair, feeling the waves that your locks had been shaped into after taking them out of the braid you'd been wearing all day. You began to think that this was a dumb idea, and you should have listened to Suki when she told you to leave the wallet at the café and wait for Sasuke to get it himself. But for some reason, you were here, and it was almost too late to turn back.
You stepped up to the reception desk in the middle of the lobby, and figured that they would be able to help you. You waited in line behind a flurry of business people, who all seemed to be in a constant rush, until you got to the front of the line.
"How may I help you?" the man behind the counter asked.
"Um, I need to speak with Sasuke Uchiha," you said, and cleared your throat. "What floor can I find him on?"
"Floor twenty is where you'll find his secretary. You have to speak with her, and she will give you information about Mr. Uchiha," he said clearly, as if he had said them to a hundred other people. You gave him your thanks, then moved on to the long row of elevators that were off to the right.
After a painfully awkward elevator ride that you shared with five other people, you made it to floor twenty and got out of the small moving room as quick as you could. You found yourself in a rectangular room with an entire wall of windows built opposite to the elevators. You looked through the glass and saw a large desk beyond it, where a single woman sat behind it. There were a few people walking around the room behind the glass, which was about as big as the room that you were currently standing in, except the one in front of you had various hallways that probably led to other parts of the office. You walked forward to the glass wall, pulled open the heavy glass door, and walked straight up to the secretary.
She looked up at your before you reached the desk, and smiled in the sort of fake friendly way that most people in her position did. "Hello." She smiled brightly, but her eyes were dull. "How can I help you?"
"I need to see Sasuke Uchiha," you said.
"Okay," she said, and began typing something into her computer. "Do you have an appointment?"
"No."
"Unless you have a meeting scheduled with Mr. Uchiha, I'm afraid you can't speak with him. If you would like, I can..." You stopped listening to what she was saying when you noticed a familiar face walking into the room, and weave into a different hall.
"Naruto!" you said a little too loudly. The blond jumped slightly and whipped his head around to find out who had startled him. When his eyes landed on you, he looked confused, but then soon smiled.
"Hey, (Y/N)," he said. There was a certain mischievous glint in his eyes that you didn't quite understand, but he seemed just as friendly as before. "What are you doing here?"
You held up the wallet. "Sasuke left his wallet at your table, so I came to get it back to him." You sighed, then had an idea. "Can you just pass it on to him for me?" you asked.
"You should come up and give it to him yourself so he can thank you properly for going to all of this trouble," he said energetically.
"Oh, I don't think-"
"Come on!" he said, and lightly held your wrist in his hand. He pulled you through the large office floor, weaving you through office spaces, past board rooms and employee lounges, until you were brought to the end of one hallway, where there was a set of large wooden doors. The name 'CEO: Sasuke Uchiha' was printed on a gold nameplate and built onto the door. Naruto didn't even knock before barging through the doors and into the office, which you guessed was something he did a lot.
Sasuke wasn't even alarmed when he heard the noise of someone bursting through the doors, but when he looked up and saw that it was not only his annoying friend standing in the doorway, but you as well, he was suddenly alert.
"Hey, look who's here," Naruto said smugly, and let go of your wrist.
"(Y/N)," Sasuke said incredulously, not believing that you had actually came when he was so close to giving up on you.
"I'll leave you two alone," Naruto said, not at all subtly, and then slunk out of the room. Sasuke smacked his hand to his forehead, amazed yet annoyed at how Naruto could be so stupid. He sighed, as you still stood in the doorway, awkwardly shuffling your feet. Sasuke pushed back his desk chair and stood up, then walked around the desk to sit on the edge of it.
"What are you doing here?" Sasuke asked, a little harsher than he intended.
You held up the wallet as proof for your importance in being here. "You forgot your wallet at your table. Sorry, I sort of looked inside of it, but at least it's back in your possession," you said, then handed it over to him.
"Thanks, I appreciate it," he said, trying to sound like this was his plan the entire time. You were completely oblivious to the fact that you'd fallen into the trap that he had not so cleverly set up, but the way you were staring at him he felt as if you could see right through him.
Sasuke flipped open his wallet, and noticed that everything was in its proper place. You didn't touch a thing. Except for a few pieces of paper that he immediately noticed weren't present. "You cleared out my numbers," he said with a slight smirk.
You were confused by this statement, not understanding what he had said. But once you remembered all of the scraps of paper with phone numbers written on them, which you had forgotten to shove back in the wallet before giving it back to him, you smiled embarrassedly.
"Oh, yeah. Sorry, they just kind of fell out and I forgot to put them back in. They're back at the café, I can go and get them if you want," you offered, although the last thing you wanted to do was run another errand for him. You weren't his waitress anymore, you didn't have to serve him unless he was at the café.
"No, it's fine," Sasuke said, and waved his hand dismissively. He smirked, which while he thought was a slick move, you thought was annoying. "I wasn't going to call them anyways."
"Oh really? And why is that?" you asked, although you didn't know why. You didn't care about his personal life, but the way he said he wasn't going to bother calling them was so cocky, you felt the urge to put him down. "Those women weren't good enough for you?"
He raised an eyebrow at your statement. "Not my type."
You huffed and crossed your arms, then began slowly inching your way out of the room. "Well, now that you have you wallet I guess I should go," you said.
Sasuke wanted to tell you that you should stay, maybe chat, but he knew that you would never agree to that, and if his workers saw that he had invited a woman into his office to 'hang out', they wouldn't respect him. "Fine," was all he said, as he watched you roll your eyes and disappear down the hall. He ran his hand through his hair and sighed, thinking that he messed up an opportunity to talk to you, really talk to you. You'd be on his mind for the rest of the day.
While you were making your way out of the building, a little worked up over speaking to Sasuke, you couldn't help but think of him, with his cocky smirk, arrogant attitude, and intimidating stare. He was everything you hated in a man, and yet you couldn't help but have his face pop into your head, making you feel flushed all over again. He'd be on your mind for the rest of the day.
