I was constantly plugging in the curler to run it back in my pin straight hair, but to no avail will the curls stay. I was beginning to worry about how much the light bill would come to. I looked up at the clock and it read 3:45. My mouth fell open in surprise, i spent 54 minutes curling and curling my hair. After my fourth attempt at my hair i gave up and hoped my face would make up for the disaster on top of my head. I tried around 3 o clock I curled it and went to do my make up. I looked in the mirror and the curles were only at the ends. That's when I realized they were wearing off. After my fourth attempt I plugged out the curler and brushed out the remaining curls. I gave up on my hair and tried to make my face make up for the disaster on top of my head. I tried the look I saw many times on television. Black eyeliner rimmed the bottom and top of my eyes, along with a nude eyeshadow and mascara. It didn't exactly... come out the way I hoped. I wanted to make my dark hazel eyes pop, but the only thing it did was make me look like a zombie. It didn't help that I had jet black hair and really really fair skin. I groaned loudly and gave up on the whole look. I could never look like those preppy celebrities. I grabbed my phone to tell James an excuse that I wasn't coming but Lily's face when she is with Rodney popped in my brain. James words rung in my ears. "You do know that if I can't go, then neither can you right?"
I must admit it stung when Lily didn't remember to ask me. I am one of her friends. I got over it fast though, she isn't one to remember things. I tossed the phone back on the bed and changed into my regular, a jacket, jeans and a tee shirt. I like to think of today as hanging out rather than a date. I looked up at the clock and it read 4:30. I put the curler and makeup back behind the drawer where I hid them.
By the time I got to the beach it was 4:56 and I found Rodney and Lily giggling and flying a kite that looked like a parrot. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes and headed over to them. I cleared my throat and the both faced me, cheeks pink from excitement.
"You're here!" Lily exclaimed letting go of Rodney and giving me a hug. I patted her lightly on the back and she pulled away grinning from ear to ear. I noticed there were only three of us right now and I believe there is supposed to be four. "Where's James" I asked Rodney who shrugged his shoulders in response and turned back to his kite, Lily following lead.
"Couldn't get enough of me could you." I heard a deep voice behind my say followed by a low chuckle. I faced the person behind me and looked him up and down. He looked good to say the least. The wind whipped past us causing his bangs to fall in his baby blue eyes as well as his beanie to go loose. He fixed himself and grinned down at me. My eyes dropped to the object clutched in his hand. He saw me staring and opened it up flattening it out on the warm sand beneath us. It was a blue and yellow fish with a white wire attached to it.
"Sorry I couldn't find anything pink or purple. It was either this or a green square." He said scratching the back of his neck. His breath smelled of cigarettes and mint. I scrunched up my face and pinched my nose looking at him. "You reek." He looked at my funny and raised one eyebrow at me. He shook his head and unraveled the kite and signaling me to take the string. I didn't take it, instead I crossed my arms and shook my head.
"You dont want to fly it?" He asked shaking the wire in my direction. "No" I answered fiddling with the zipper on my jacket. "I'll just watch you."
"Oh so you really couldn't get enough of me then." He smirked staring at me. "No I can get enough of you. In fact I have and now I would like to see a fish swimming in the sky, if you don't mind." I said walking down the pier, Rodney and Lily far ahead. He chuckled and followed me throwing the kite in the wind. We watched it float upwards stopping just below the clouds.
"So parsley, what else do you draw other than the school?" I walked forward not bothering to look behind me or answer the boy who called me a vegetable. The kite wiggled out of his grasp and he grabbed it before it could fly away. I didn't plan on answering him, or talking to him, until I heard my correct name. The kite slipped through his fingers again but he managed to catch the end of the string before it went too far.
