chapter one: playgrounds

-

I fondly watched as Lillian swung back and forth on the swing, other kids squealing as they ran around and slid down the slide and swung on the swings. Lillian was chattering with another girl her age, who's hair was braided in two adorable braids cascading over her shoulders.

Suddenly my phone started vibrating in my pocket and I pulled it out, looking at the caller ID before answering.

"Hey mom."

"Hey. How's the park?" she asked.

"Great. Lily's made a friend," I giggled.

"Awe, cute!" my mom cooed. "Hey, listen, I know you and Lillian have plans to hangout tomorrow, but she needs to be back at the hospital by 3. This band is coming to perform for the kids."

"Awe, that's nice. Do you know what band is playing?" I asked her, resting my chin on the palm of my unused hand.

"Something like 5 Minutes of Spring."

"5 Seconds of Summer?"

"Yeah!"

I laughed to myself. My best friend Emily is obsessed with them.

"Well, I'm about to leave work. Come back to the hospital so I can see Lillian."

"Okay. Bye mom," I bid her goodbye.

"Bye. Make sure to get Lillian's friend's number!"

"Okay! Bye!"

We hung up, and right away Lillian and her new friend came bouncing over, holding hands.

"Hi Lils. Who's this?" I asked her.

"This is my friend Bailey," Lily proudly said.

"Hi Bailey. I'm Lily's sister, Katie."

"Hi," Bailey shyly said. "You're really pretty."

I almost gasped at the compliment. "Thank you," I felt a blush and looked around.

"Bailey where's your mommy or daddy? Maybe you and Lily can stay friends?"

Bailey took my hand and pulled me up to my seat, then ran, tugging Lily and I over to a woman sitting near other parents on the bench.

"Mommy! I made friends."

This is Lily, and that's her big sister Katie," Bailey said to the older woman.

Her mom stood up to introduce herself to me. "Hi Katie. I'm Erin."

I smiled at her. "Lily and Bailey seem to have become good friends. I was wondering if you'd like for them to keep in touch?"

"Sure! What school is Lily going to?"

"She's about to become a first grader at LA elementary," I told Erin.

"So is Bailey!" Erin cried.

We chatted for a few more minutes, then exchanged numbers and promised the girls that they'd hangout soon. Bailey was really cute.

She was the first friend Lily's made. Ever since she's started being in the hospital more she's seemed to become less social. She isn't friends with any of the kids in her class at school, and she doesn't talk to the other hospital kids much. I had begun to worry about her, but then she met Bailey.

In the car we passed by an ice cream shop, which Lily pleaded for me to go. But it was getting late and I didn't want her hyper from all of the sugar. So she whined about it for the rest of the ride, and I promised her we'd go tomorrow when she got back from school.

When we got back to the hospital Lily changed into her pajamas and we cuddled up on her bed and she went right to sleep. She had only been asleep for about 10 minutes when my mom walked in.

"She's asleep?" she whispered.

I nodded, and slowly slid out of the bed, leaving Lily curled up in a ball under the blankets. I tucked her in, then gentle kissed her forehead then stepped out the room with mom.

"Did you get Lily's friend's number?" my mom asked me, leaning against the wall.

I nodded. "Her friend is going to the same school in the fall."

"Oh that's nice. I'm glad Lillian made a friend."

I nodded in agreement.

"Let's go home. I'm tired!" my mom cried, then walked into Lily's room to kiss her goodnight and get whatever she had in there.

I stood out in the hallway and texted Em, my best friend.

Me: hey. I have a surprise for you tomorrow

Em <3: what is it?

Me: we can carpool after school together. You'll love it :)

Em: okay.. see you tomorrow.

Me: see you tomorrow
