It was a miserable night. It was pouring it down with rain, I was about 10 miles from home and my boyfriend had just broken up with me. I made my way sluggishly walking along with only a thin, soaked denim jacket to keep me warm, my hands were turning blue from the cold. Cars consistently splashed me and mocked me while they drove past, there was nothing to make me feel worse about myself.
I walked past the venue, girls were coming out screaming and crying wearing t-shirts with 'David Bowie' written on them. ''Pathetic fan girls'' I whispered to myself.

It was 11pm, I had a curfew of 10pm and I was still an easy hour away from my house. Funny that I was 18 and still had to be home in the early evening. I pulled my last cigarette out of the Marlboro packet, discarded the empty remnants onto the floor and placed the cigarette delicately between my lips, I stopped to hunt for my lighter in all 7 of my pockets. ''fuck sake'' I said out loud, although no one was around me.
I began walking again, just before I was about to throw my almost sopping wet cig on the floor I caught sight of someone smoking in the distance. I held my cigarette  from the rain and made my way fast pacing into their direction. The figure was fairly tall and wearing a long hooded black cotton coat, I couldn't see their face. ''Excuse me'' I said loud enough for them to hear me, I was about a 1 metre away from them now and the figure looked in my direction. ''excuse me'' i said again. ''Yes?'' a low, English accent voice replied back to me. We were looking at each other now, his face was fairly pale, his cheeks and jaw were sharp and defined. One of his eyes looked to be more dilated than the other, he was stood under a street light and looked very attractive. He pulled a drag on his cigarette, I pulled mine out of my hand and placed it in my mouth again, ''can I borrow your lighter please'' i said muffled, trying to talk with the cig in my mouth. He looked at me and laughed. ''That thing won't bloody light'' his strong English accent gave me goosebumps, I tried to stay cool. I pulled the cigarette out of my mouth and inspected it closely. I began laughing, I noticed it was almost fallen apart and damp as hell. ''oh for fuck sake'' I chuckled. '' do you mind if I steal a cigarette... And use your lighter...'' I looked up at him hopelessly, he was almost a foot taller than me. He nodded his head and pulled a packet of Marlboro out of his pocket along with his lighter. He pulled a cigarette from the packet and passed it to me. ''Thank you so much, I've really had a rough night'' i placed the cigarette between my lips and he passed me the lighter, I lit it and passed him his lighter back. ''What? is it not everyday you beg total strangers for cigarettes?'' he said sarcastically. I pulled a drag on my cigarette and laughed. ''No, no, apparently just tonight.'' the laugher had gone from my voice as I realised my events earlier in the night and the slap from my mum I'll get when I walk in later on. I pulled a final drag from my cigarette and then threw it onto the floor. ''If I don't get home soon as possible my mum is going to kill me. Thank you for the cigarette though and for keeping me company.'' I said, politely, making it sound like I wasn't upset as best as I could.
''where do you live?'' he said, concerned.
''oh not far... maybe... like 3 miles down that way'' my heart sank with the realisation of how far I still had to go.
''Follow me, I'm just parked around the next block, I'll give you a lift home'' he sounded sincere and polite. But I realised this was a man I had just met, whom I had no idea what their name was or how old they were.
''I better not, it's a pretty easy walk... Lots of street lights, I'll be fine, thank you for the offer though'' I said as I began making my way down the street away from him.
''Don't be so stupid! You'll catch a death, it's minus 4 degrees out. Come on'' he sounded stern, I obliged and followed him sulkily, but also slightly glad I didn't have to walk for 2 hours on my own in the cold.
We got to his car, it was a little silver Cadillac, he opened the passenger side for me and smiled, his teeth were rather crooked but suited him finely and enhanced his facial features. I smiled back at him while I placed myself into the seat of his car, he closed the door behind me and made his way round the car to the drivers seat. When he got into the car and turned the key for the engine on, I quickly made the point that he didn't need to take me home. '' Well we're in the car now, so might as well'' he smiled at me. ''Just give me directions please.'' ''OK, just keep going straight down this road, then take the 3rd left'' I replied.
'''lots of streetlights''' he mocked, as we made our way up the pitch black road with the only source of light being the dim headlights of his car.
''I didn't want you to worry about me'' I blushed.
10 minutes passed as we sat in silence.
''This turn?'' he said pointing down my street.
''yes, down here then it's like the 5th house on your side'' I said, excited and worried to get home finally.
''Ok, I'll just park here'' he replied, a few metres away from my house.
When the car came to a holt I got ready to get out. ''Thank you so much for the lift, it was kind of you.''
''wait'' he said, almost trying to block me from getting out. '' I'll be in this city for another few days, will you meet again?'' Say I come pick you up tomorrow at 6?'' he sounded desperate.
''tomorrow at 6? ok.'' I felt my cheeks redden and butterflies in my stomach. A foolish smile grew across my face,he smiled back at me. ''Goodbye'' I said happily before pulling myself out the car. His car didn't leave the spot until I was at my front door. I gave him a wave before entering my house.
