My mother was at the door ready to greet me, the smile on my face and the excitement in my stomach was suddenly replaced with the dreaded realisation that I now had to listen to a 20 minute speech of how unsafe it is for young girls to be out on their own in this day and age blah blah blah. I loved the woman dearly but how old fashioned she was did manage to irritate me, nonetheless I abided by her rules with a few hiccups that I definitely got punished for. I didn't respect my mother for her strict rules but more for the strain of dealing with a hormonal 18 year old girl and a 7 year old son by herself in the middle of San Francisco without a steady income, nevertheless she made it work.
After a kiss on the cheek and a goodnight from my mum I went straight to my bed to review the past 4 hours. I was no longer upset about the sudden breakup with my childhood sweetheart nor of my aching limbs due to the long walk and the rain which may be triggering an illness now. All I could think about was The Man. That beautiful gentleman who went out his way to help me, a complete stranger. He wants to see me tomorrow! Suddenly that feeling of excitement was back and a smile began to grow on my face. Maybe all those shitty things that happened tonight were all blessings to bring us together.
