Luke POV:
I hadn't heard from Zoe for a couple of hours so I sent her an email;
"You've been really quiet today, I hope you're alright. I'm really worried about my little girl, please email me as soon as possible."
I was so concerned for her well-being, I knew that she was busy with Uni but it was strange that she would be so busy to the point that she would ignore me.
After a couple of hours I got a reply;
"I'm fine, just out for a drive."
"Where are you?"
"Umm...on the way to Sydney."
I was stunned, confused and absolutely pissed off.
I called her and she answered.
"Hello Zoe, why the fuck are you on the way to Sydney?"
"Because I felt like going for a road trip to clear my head."
I sighed, I knew she wasn't being deliberately frustrating or rude.
"Baby, you could've just spoken to me."
"I feel guilty for burdening you, because you're busy with work and I don't want you to worry about me when you're already worrying about other things. Please don't be mad, take a deep breath and we'll work through this."
I took a deep breath, and explained my frustration;
"I just want you to know that I have your best interests at heart, Zoe. I'm always available to listen to you. I am so proud of you and have so much admiration, you're going to be able to do so much with your life, and I will do anything I can to assist you. But, I would rather you tell me where you're going, who you're with and what you're doing."
I could hear her sigh, "Yep. I know."
"What else is wrong?" I asked.
"I don't know who I am, Luke."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I don't really have things for myself. I have you, you have me, we have our plans, you have your career, but I'm lost."
"So, you need to find yourself?"
"I don't know what I need at the moment."
"Well, why don't you turn around, come back and we'll go out for dinner and discuss this." I stated earnestly.
"I'm not ready to turn around."
"Alright, well, why don't I meet you up there, I'll book a flight and meet you at the Opera House in two days."
"Two days?"
"Yeah, that should give you plenty of time to get there, then we'll drive back together."
"Sure."
"Zoe, I do love you."
"I know you do. I love you too."
She hung up and I stared longingly at the phone. I called my friend, Cameron, and we agreed to go out for drinks.
By the time we got to the bar it was packed. We grabbed a table outside and shared a few pints between us.
"What's up Luke, you seem down."
"It's Zoe."
"What did she do this time?" He grinned.
"She's driving up to Sydney."
"And?"
"And I was going to surprise her with a trip up there and throw this massive surprise engagement at the Opera House."
"So?"
"So now it's basically ruined."
"Not really." He argued.
"How so?"
"Well, just meet her up there."
"That's what I've arranged."
"Well, what are you worried about?"
"I'm worried that she'll say no and I'm worried that she knows I'm going to ask her."
"She wouldn't know; besides, she's eighteen, you can't expect her to not want to stretch her wings on independence and freedom."
"How do you keep Jess in line?"
"I cane her, but she's twenty-seven so she's past that crazy stage."
I paused, thinking.
"And, I take Jess's phone and only allow her to have one friend."
"Really?" I asked, shocked.
"Really. Zoe could be her one friend."
"Why do you want Zoe to be her friend?"
"Zoe needs a good influence and Jess needs a friend; it's a win-win."
I nodded, we finished our drinks.
"Will I see you at poker next Monday?" I asked.
"Of course! Hey, if I bring Jess you could bring Zoe."
We agreed that would be best and I headed home.
I got my plane ticket and packed my bag, ensuring that Zoe's engagement ring was inside.
