Emilia walked across the beach at the waters edge. Her thongs in her hand. Girls ran around in bikinis while the boys chanced them, playing with them and tickling them. She could see the love in their eyes, the young love. It reminded her of the young love she once had, a long time ago. After she left him-or he left her-she refused to love again. William changed her life, helped her decide what to do next, without even knowing it. She watches the sun rise every morning, remembering her last kiss with him. How he held her and the black ball gown she wore. She squeezes her eyes shut and shakes her head, trying to forget. Looking out over the ocean, she watched as the last of the sun disappeared. She walked home to a beach house, about half a block away. Entering the beach house she smelt her adoptive mums famous resoto. Her favourite.
"I'm home!" she called into the kitchen.
"Oh, good. Go clean up, dinner will be ready in ten." she called back.
Emilia raced up the stairs to her bedroom. She grabbed her clothes out from her closet and wandered down to the bathroom. Flinging the door open she was surprised to find Johnny standing over the sink, shaving. She burst out laughing causing Johnny she jerk the razor away from his, cutting himself across the cheek.
"Aw, is little Johnny growing up?" she spoke in a baby voice while pinching the cheek that wasn't bleeding. He flicked her hand away. "I'm not little. And stop calling me Johnny."
"Oh, I'm sorry. John." she said a tinge of sarcasm in her voice.
"I'm 14 now and I have a girlfriend. Unlike you who hasn't got a boyfriend."
She just shook her head. "When will you understand that you don't need a girlfriend and that I don't need a boyfriend."
"When you're old and lonely and have ten cats."
"I tell you what you really need to understand-" she says leaning down to whisper in his ear "-you need hair on your face before you start to shave it."
At that point he lost his temper and went to punch her in the shoulder, she jumped out of is way easily. He missed by a meter. "How did you do that?" he gawks. She just grins and whispers "Magic."
"Really?"
"No. Now get out of here." she says kicking his ankles until he's out of the bathroom. She shuts the door after he poked his tong out at her. Turning the water on in the shower, she striped down and stepped under the hot water. After washing her hair and her body she stood under the running water. Reliving one of her most hatted moments in 1707.
Her mother and father, her real mother and father, stood in the backyard of their country house. Talking, just talking until her fathers voice started to rise. He was yelling at her mother pointing out somewhere in the distance. He slapped her across the face. Making Emilia cringe. Tears filled her mothers eyes as she yelled back at him, pointing up to Emilia's room. He just shook his head and pulled a knife out of his sleeve. Upon seeing it her mother started to turn and run but he was to fast for her. Throwing her onto the ground he laughed. Kneeling down over her he carelessly jammed the knife into her chest. Emilia couldn't take it any longer. She ran. Ran away from her father, her mothers lifeless body, lying limp on the ground. She could hear her fathers voice calling her taunting her. "Emilia." She picked up her speed, everything going past in a blur.
"Emilia." he called again again, except it wasn't his voice.
"Emilia." a ladies voice called, snapping her out of her reverie.
"Emilia, dinners ready." her mothers voice called again. Emilia rapidly turn the shower off and stepped out. She dried herself off and wrapped the towel around her head. Pulling on her pajamas she turned the light off and opened the door. She took the steps two by two and waked into the dinning room. She sat across from Johnny and poked her tong out at him. Even though she had only known him for almost year it was like she'd known him all her life. It was the first time she had ever been adopted. From 1700 to 2013, she had never once been adopted. She always lived on her own or with her friends. That didn't bother her much since she always had to move after three or four years, due to her never changing appearance. Always looking somewhere between 16-20 and acting as if she was 30 always managed to fool people that she was around the age of 25. She also knew how to act like a teenager. Which is what she had to do if she wanted this family not think she was over 20. When she turned 18, in 1718, she didn't age a day. That was when she realized what she was and what her father was. All that behind her she focused on the family in front of her. Still not sure whether to call her adoptive mum, mum or by her name, Angela. "Emilia, Johnny-"
"Please don't call me Johnny."
"John. Since tonight is the last night of the holidays and you're moving up a year, I got you both a gift." Angela says placing two neatly wrapped boxes on the table. Emilia's smaller then Johnny's. Johnny reached to take to box but received a small slap on the wrist. "Eat your dinner first."
Johnny groaned and started scoffing down his food. Emilia did as well, eating how a normal person would. Which is nothing like brother. "Emilia, do you have a boyfriend?" Angela asked stabbing a piece if pasta. Emilia almost choked. "No, I don't think I'm ready for that. But Johnny seems to be." she says, her lips curving up slightly. "Johnny!" their mum exclaimed. "I didn't know you had a boyfriend."
Johnny's jaw dropped open, his eyes going all distorted. Emilia spat out the water she was drinking, spraying Johnny. Their mums face looked appalled. "Emilia! Whipe your chin."
Their mum turned her attention back to a glaring Johnny. "Now, Johnny. It's okay that you have a boy-"
"Mum I don't-"
"Now, now. Just let me finish. It's okay that you have a boyfriend. I support that and I'm proud of you for coming out and excepting who you are."
Johnny glared at Emilia. "Stop laughing it's not funny. Mum I don't have a boyfriend I have a girlfriend."
"Oh, ha-ha. Um who is this girlfriend of yours?"
"Her names Bronté. Can I please open my gift now, I've finished my dinner."
"Alright young man. But don't think you're getting out of anything. Emilia, are you done too?"
Emilia nodded chewing on the last pieces of pasta.
"Geez, you're such a pig." Johnny says studying his new school bag.
"Says you." Emilia retorted pulling the wrapping paper off the box. She opened the box to find an iphone5S.
"That's so unfair." Johnny whined.
"Why did you get me something so expensive?" Emilia asked turning the phone over and over in her hands.
"Well I figured that because you're going into your senior years, you would be studying late hours. So you can use it to call me and use it for other things as well." Angela explained.
"Wow, Thank you so much."
"It's okay. Now both of you go get ready for bed its nearly nine."
Emilia and Johnny raced up the stairs to the bathroom. While cleaning their teeth Johnny asked, "Why'd you tell her?"
Emilia looked at him. "Tell her what?"
"That I have a girlfriend. Duh."
"She was going to find out sooner or later-"she says after spitting into the sink, "-and now that she knows and it's out of the way, you'll feel better."
"How do you always have words of wisdom, master?"
"With time, young grasshopper."
They both laughed.
"Are you ever going to get a boyfriend?" he asked splashing water onto his face.
"I don't know."
"Well you can't be by yourself forever. Whoever the last person you were with, their gone now, and they must have really messed you up." with that he left. After saying goodnight.
Emilia stood in front of the mirror brushing her hair. Maybe he's right. Maybe I do need to move on. She placed the brush down and flicked off the light. Climbing into her bed she laid still for a moment, listening to the waves. Maybe it's time to start over. Really start over. She flicked the light off and rolled over. Hoping that instead of a nightmare of her old, old life she revived a happy memory of it. And so, she did.
