SOUL MATES AU! I've wanted to do one of these for a long time and I've finally finished this draft that's been sitting here for years! Anyways, I found this idea on Pintrest and I don't know who it's by, but please enjoy :)

Aliya swallowed the lump in her throat as she anxiously scratched at the timer imbedded in her wrist. She tried not to think about the numbers that were casually ticking down to 00:00, or how they were currently at 01:04:30-something seconds.
She got many sympathizing looks from passersby that understood what she was going through; the fear and excitement of meeting your soulmate. That's what the timer on her wrist was counting down to. It was counting down to the moment she would meet the person she was destined to love forever. Everyone learned about the timers in health class during elementary school, and by then some people had even met their soul mates.
Aliya found this process to be a terribly nerve-wracking experience, and to be quite honest she didn't think she was even ready to fall in love. Responsibilities for another person's feelings? Nope. Aliya wasn't a very romantic person — or at least she hadn't met the right person to make her a sappy ball of mush — and she was fine with that.
She took a deep breath, pulling her navy pea coat close to her body as she crossed the busy city road.
"At least the honking cars and angry New Yorkers is something that will never change." She muttered to herself as the city hubbub passed around her.
She walked on towards her work. Aliya was proud to work at a small law firm buried within the skyscrapers and apartment buildings of downtown New York. She loved her work, she loved fighting for people, and she loved being a single, independent woman with an awesome job. She smiled to herself at that thought, because she had finally gotten to a point in her life where she could express pride at her own accomplishments.
She entered the spinning door at the front of the firm and strutted out with confidence. Everything in the building was meticulously designed and styled modernly. Sitting behind the sleek black front desk was an elderly woman named Anaya, who had a cheery personality and a calming demeanour. As the secretary, she loved to chat with anyone who came in to the building. Aliya considered their chats one of the best parts of her day.
This morning, Anaya beamed at her with a knowing look in her eyes. "Today's the day, yes?" She asked.
Aliya gave her a tight smile and a slight nod, shaking her hair in its tight bun. "Just about an hour, Anaya."
"Oh good for you, sweetheart. It's about time!" She laughed, her smile lines depending around her warm eyes.
"Yeah." Aliya agreed awkwardly, walking the rest of the way to the elevator with slightly less pep in her step. Even Anaya couldn't help lessen the anxiety she felt today.
She sighed as the elevator door closed behind her and she pressed the familiar button to get her to floor 6.
I suppose 28 is relatively old for someone to be meeting the love of their life. You've practically lived a third of your life and so much could happen to someone in that time, they could die or get addicted to something or ... Oh no, what if my soulmate is a drug addict? Or a serial killer? Or-
Ding! Aliya's mental tangent was paused by the elevator reaching the sixth floor. She straightened her pencil skirt and jacket before stepping out into work with a wide smile.
Her black heels click clacked on the tile floor as she made her way to her personal cubicle. She hoped to be on the eighth floor in a couple years, that's where the best paid and most respected lawyers at the firm were. As she sat down at her modest desk, her mind and eyes wandered down to the timer on her wrist.
