Shining Like The Sun

When I think of her I think of sunny days with blue skies on a grassy hill in the middle of nowhere. The sounds I hear are muted laughter, the soft swish of the wind, and the lilting buzz of nature. I feel the blades of grass tickle between my shoulder blades as I lie there, basking in the golden sunlight. I close my eyes against the sun, no longer seeing, just feeling and sensing the world around me. Finally relaxing and feeling the peace that ebbs through me with every deep breath, every inhale of clean air and pollen and the musty scent that is simply the earth below me. I spread my arms wide, palms down, and dig my fingers lightly into the ground. The dirt forces beneath my fingernails and the crumbly texture of the soil brings me back to the moment as I crush it between my hands.

"What are you doing?"

Her voice warms me more than the sun's rays. Its timbre is slightly deeper, yet light with the amusement in it.

I roll to my left, allowing the heat of the sun to hit my back, and prop my face against my muddy fist.

"Enjoying this," I respond, opening one eye to peer at her, slowly coming out of my relaxed state.

The dimples in her cheeks deepen as she grins at me. Her tone teasing when she asks, "Enjoying the view? Or us being together?"

I turn my head to survey the sprawling landscape around us, truly taking in the greens, yellows, and the azure blue of the sky as I ponder my answer to her question. I look back at her, gauging her expression. I trace my eyes over her warm skin, her long hair, and her strong features, before settling my gaze in her eyes. She tilts her head, the side of her lips tilting up and her brows pinching together as she gives me a soft, puzzled glance.

"Both."

The words slip through my lips like the breeze through tiny blades of grass; nearly silent, hardly creating a ripple of movement. Their effect is not so much as the radiance of her smile washes over me once again, brighter and full of more warmth than the sun could ever provide.

Hello to anyone who read this before or is reading it now! I took a break from writing and my creative side for a little while - as well as deleted Wattpad - so this collection hasn't seen an update in a couple of years. A friend of mine recently got me to re-download the app and I am currently editing my old stories so I can hopefully repost them. In the meantime, happy pride month and I hope you enjoy this update that features my up-to-date writing style :)
