A Difficult Situation
Daniel’s POV
We stood there in the silence. Annabelle looked at me, and then at Rose, and back to me. “W…what are you doing?” she managed to say.
I searched my mind for an answer. Something that would make the situation less worse. But I couldn’t find anything to say.
“Are you and her…together?” she asked. I nodded and so did Rose. Annabelle stared at me. I knew she wasn’t angry. She wasn’t the type. But I knew she was hurt that I’d kept something so important from her.
“I knew something was going on,” she whispered to herself. “You didn’t tell me. Don’t you know how dangerous this is?” she turned away in frustration. “I should go.” Rose whispered to me.
“Find me later, okay?” I said to her, she nodded. I waited for her to leave before talking to Annabelle.
“How long has this been going on?” She asked, still turned away from me.
“A month, perhaps two.” I admitted. “I never wanted to keep such a thing from you, but I knew that if I did-“
“I would tell? Do you really believe that I would betray you like that?”
I sighed, She was right. How could I think that my own sister would do something like that?
“I didn’t know how you would react. Believe me, I am sorry. But I’ve wanted to get out of this engagement for too long, Anna.”
She finally turned towards me. “Look, you are my brother. I respect your choices. I know how terrible Melanie is but,” she paused. “You should have told me.”
“I know.”
“You can stop seeing her. It’ll be easier for everyone if-“
“I can’t just stop seeing her, Annabelle. I love her.”
“Daniel!” she said exasperated. “This can’t happen! You know that. What will our parents say?”
“They can say what they like. I thought you’d support me in this.” I turned to leave.
“Daniel, wait.” She blocked the door. “I do support you. I have nothing against Rose, you know I don’t. But I don’t want this family torn apart.”
I was grateful for her support, but I knew she still doubted my choice.
Rose’s POV
“Will she tell someone?” Lily asked. I had told her about Annabelle walking in on us the other night. She was almost as worried as me. It was the only thing I could think about.
“I don’t know, Lily.”
“Maybe she won’t. Not if Daniel tells her not to. I think-“
The door opened. Annabelle came through. She looked concerned and worried. I didn’t blame her.
“Rose, isn’t it?” she asked me. I nodded. She turned to Lily. “Could you give us a moment?”
Lily nodded and quickly walked out, leaving me with Annabelle. I didn’t know what to say or what to do. Or whether she thought of me just as everyone else did. I looked at her and could tell that she was having the same problem I was.
“I didn’t mean for you to find out this way.” I spoke, regretting it after.
“I know you didn’t. I have nothing against you personally but, I’m worried for Daniel and I know you are too.” She was right about that. “He can get into so much trouble for this.” She said to herself.
