An Inevitable Discovery

Rose’s POV

“When are you leaving?” Lily whispered.

“You mean when we are leaving. You are coming with us, aren’t you?”

“If I can. How can you be so sure this will work anyway?” she asked, a little louder than before.

“Sssh! Annabelle’s been keeping an eye on me ever since she found out.” Lily rolled her eyes. It was five o’clock in the morning and Daniel and I had made a habit of waking up earlier than everyone else just so we could have more time together.

“Before I forget,” Lily began. “What happened with you two after I left?”

“Nothing happened. We talked that’s all.” I was a terrible liar, and the fact that I couldn’t help but smile at the thought didn’t help either.

“You’re such a bad liar,” she laughed. “Something else happened.” She searched her mind for an answer and suddenly gasped in shock. “You didn’t.”

“Didn’t what?”

“You know what. Rose, tell me you didn’t.”

I didn’t want to lie to her. “Well-“

“I knew it!” she nearly shouted but remembered herself and began to whisper again. “You’ve been acting so strange lately and I knew that- Wait a minute.” She stopped.

“What?”

“If you and Daniel…then that means-“ She was pacing back and forth.

“Lily, what is it?” I held her still.

“Rose, are you,” she paused and looked at me, concerned. “Pregnant?”

“No!” was the first thing I could say. “I don’t think so.” I said after some thought. “I can’t be.”

“Well, have you been feeling okay lately?” she asked.

“Of course, I mean, I think so-“

“Rose, you have to find out.”

“How? There’ll be no way of knowing now.”

“Then you’ll have to tell Daniel,”

I thought about this. There was a possibility that I wasn’t pregnant but then again, I could be.

“Or,” she continued, “You could-“her voice grew almost inaudible but it didn’t take me long to figure out what she was saying.

“I’m surprised you would even suggest such a thing! It’s against my morals, Lily. If I am pregnant, I’m keeping it. “ I began to walk out but Lily grabbed my arm.

“Rose, think of the outcomes of this! Where will you and Daniel go? Everyone knows who his family is and they won’t let you go so easily.”

“Lily-“

“Think about Daniel. Is this what he would want? To be an outcast in his own family? I’m not telling you to do anything drastic, Rose, but you have to think about this.”

She could be right. I never intended to cause so much for his family. And me having this child would only make thing worse.
