Odessa
I didn’t really think this through. I got up slowly trying not to break anything. I’d already almost put my back out from that jump but I didn’t want to stay there. I didn’t want to be found by Mike, or by anyone. I just wanted to disappear like my mom did. I’d screwed up my leg so standing up took longer than anticipated. The blood was starting to stain my jeans. This was my favourite pair of jeans too. My jeans worry was short lived as I hobbled closer to the water. I wouldn’t feel anything soon, just release, no longer the burden everyone has to lug around, the daughter neither parent wants. I leaned into the water then stopped. That wasn’t how I wanted to go. Struggling for my life, trying to breathe only to eventually sink to the bottom and fill up with water and float to the top all bloaty months later. I kind of wanted it to be gruesome and painless, like being hit by a truck or something. If only I’d died when I jumped off the bridge.
Suddenly I had an idea. If at first you don’t succeed try again. I made my way up the stairs and climbed back up to the top of the bridge. Believe me when I say that weren’t easy with a bleeding leg. Every move made the pain magnify, I couldn’t think of anything worse than getting glass stuck in my body. I glanced down the road, it was still car free and my shirt was still where I’d left it, on the ground where I first jumped. I picked it up and tied it around my neck. Just in case I didn’t crack my skull open and fell in the water, I didn’t want to live for too long after I’d hit the water. I wasn’t fond of swimming so I could imagine drowning wouldn’t be a picnic in the park for me either. I took one last breath of fresh air before I chucked myself off the bridge.
I closed my eyes and waited, for death, pain, anything.
I felt two sturdy hands on my waist as my feet pressed into the greenery. It was then that I opened my eyes.
