A few months after the nogitsune was defeated, another summer had passed and everyone returned to Beacon Hills High. You'd all recovered in your own ways - a lot of trauma was induced after the nogitsune did his work on the pack. He affected everyone somehow, ripping something from each of your lives and leaving a part of you missing. Your missing part was your best friend, Aiden.
You'd had time to mourn the loss. While Ethan moved to another town and Lydia had not only Aiden but Allison to mourn within the comfort of the pack, you spent the summer alone. Many days were spent in your room, watching TV or staring at rainfall through the window. You'd never lost anyone before, and coping with that was hard.
As you entered the school already comfortable with the familiar surroundings, you felt glad to see the busy traffic of students and friends. It was refreshing after confining yourself for so long. Finding your locker wasn't hard - you had the same one for your entire attendance here. After fumbling with the combination a few times, you finally propped it open and began placing your new textbooks in.
And then you froze.
On the inside of your locker door were dozens of decorations you'd forgotten to remove before the summer started. Some were photos of you with your sibling and others were just little ornamental stickers - but there was one thing that immediately caught your eye. You numbly placed your fingers over it, brushing away accumulated dust.
A picture of you and Aiden.
It was the last thing you needed right now. Even after all the mourning you did, the very thought of him hurt. You could already feel a tightening feeling in your chest, tugging on your lungs. You couldn't breathe. You couldn't pull your eyes away from his smiling face next to yours. You couldn't suppress the sorrow and anger, every emotion you felt after his loss. You didn't know what to do with yourself; you were still with shock and despair.
The photo suddenly blurred behind your tear-filled vision. A hand was gently placed on your shoulder, which should have scared you, but you felt completely stupefied. You didn't care who it was. You didn't care about the students whispering and giggling as they walked by you. Nothing mattered, except the fact that you were lost without your best friend; you were alone. You would be alone for the rest of high school. Ethan left the town, Danny hasn't spoken to you in months, and you pushed away the pack for an entire summer; they'd never forgive that. You wouldn't blame them - they had a hard enough time trusting you when your best friend was a former enemy of theirs.
You payed no attention to whomever was with you. Their voice was just white noise to you. They continued speaking, however, their hand beginning to comfortingly rub your arm. You wanted to scream at them to leave you alone while at the same time wanting to collapse onto the floor and never get up - but you had the energy to do neither. You continued to take no notice of them and glared a hole through the photo that held a peaceful, happy memory. They stepped in between you and your locker door.
"Hey," Lydia's solemn voice pulled you back down to earth. "Are you alright?"
You spoke in a fragile voice. "I - I'm..."
"I know you miss him," she nodded. "I do, too. Just... He wasn't one of us. He never was; he'd always been a bad guy, and that wasn't his fault."
How could she say that? She was something to him. He cared about her. His last words were about her! She was practically all he talked about for his whole stay here. You gave him endless hours of your time listening to him gush about how he wanted to change for her; for Scott. He wanted to be better so him and his brother could have a pack.
"No," you stared her dead in the eye. "Maybe that's what he was to you, but not to me. He was my best friend... Almost like a brother. He wanted to change and become a better person, and his sacrifice showed that. He wasn't a bad guy to me... He was my hero."
She looked speechless for a moment, and then she nodded. "I'm sorry."
"Excuse me," you mumbled, directing your gaze to the floor. "I gotta get going."
Wordlessly, she stepped aside. You took one last longing gaze at the picture before slamming your locker shut and walking away. Clicking heels sounded right behind you, growing louder and faster-paced.
"Wait!" Lydia called out.
You halted and glared over your shoulder. "What is it?"
"We're still here for you," she admitted. "Just because you ignored us all summer, doesn't mean we're not your friends anymore."
"But I -"
"Needed time. And we got that, after a while."
You readjusted your bag on your shoulder. "Thanks."
"So we'll see you at lunch, then?" She smiled.
"Yeah, sure," you agreed, backing away. "See you at lunch."
Maybe you wouldn't have to be alone after all.
