Out of everyone in the pack, Boyd had always been the most... Isolated. He hid his feelings well and was selective about who he was friends with. You and Boyd weren't the closest of friends, but you had taken a liking to him when you joined the pack and frequently began spending more time with him. However, one day, you saw a side of him you'd never expected to see.
"Hiya," you greeted as you plopped into your seat next to him.
"Hey." He mumbled, staring down at his hands.
You frowned and scooted your seat closer to his. "You alright?"
"'M fine."
"You don't sound like it. What's wrong?" You wondered, although you weren't expecting him to open up.
He gave no answer and you huffed as the teacher started class. When the last bell of the day rang, Boyd flew out of his set and treaded out of the room. You rushed to gather your things, catching up to Boyd and walking alongside him. Neither of you said anything until you got outside.
"Alright, hey, hey," you pulled Boyd back by his shoulder. "You can talk to me."
He bit his lip. "I don't want to."
You stared at him for a moment, taking in his watery eyes and quivering lip. You had never seen him so fragile.
As you opened your mouth to speak, he blurted, "I miss Erica." and tears began flowing freely down his cheeks.
You raised your eyebrows in shock. It had been a few months since Erica's passing, and you didn't know Boyd was still mourning her. "Hey, hey, it's okay," you cooed. You wrapped your arm around his waist and lead him to the bleachers on the field where no one would stare at him.
"I should have helped her, I - I watched her die," he whispered.
You wiped away his tears and offered a sad smile. "There was nothing you could do, Boyd."
He squeezed his eyes shut, allowing more tears to escape. "You're wrong. I saw the fear in her eyes, and how she reached out to me in her dying moment. She knew what was happening and sh - she was terrified, (Y/N). Every day I regret sitting there and watching her overestimate her strength that night. She was no match for Kali, and alpha. I could have stopped her, dammit!"
You sat silently as he ranted on, now shaking with rage. Truly not knowing what to say, you shuffled closer to him and hugged his warm body. "I'm sorry."
He sighed. "Thanks."
You pulled away and looked up into his pained, dark eyes. "Try to remember Erica for who she was, and how she changed your life for the better. She wouldn't be mad at you, and you know it. Stop blaming yourself, okay?"
He gave a small nod. "Okay. Thank you, (Y/N)."
"Anytime." You grinned.
The two of you went out to dinner that night, laughing and opening up to each other more and more. After that day, you and Boyd had a strong bond with one another, and a friendship formed that would soon become inseparable.
