Ava sat against the headboard of her mother's bed, her body slack and her eyes filled with tears. She rubbed her red face in irritation and frustration, silence overtaking the small room. She could barely breathe, her chest rising and falling every so often. Her thoughts consumed her, every fibre of her being falling limb to the numb emotions tugging at her heart. The sound of the persistent rings buzzed from the lounge downstairs for the fifth time, she only sat still, ignoring the dull noise.
She bit down on her lip, chewing on the dried skin with a brute force, drawing out a trickle of blood. The familiar metallic taste lingered on her lips as she slowly made her way towards her bedroom before settling at her desk. A laugh bubbled out of her as she gripped onto her cellphone with shaky hands. Her eyes stung, and her throat clogged up with emotion as she dialled his number. Though the useless ten digits only caused her to crack further.
"Hey it's Will, I'm not here at the moment, but leave your name and your number after the beep and I'll call you back as soon as I can."
She let out a strangled cry, the tears that once brimmed her eyes fell like a waterfall, slowly flowing down her cheeks, dripping onto the wooden floors. Her heart pounded in her ears as she took one more glance at the cellphone in her hands before chucking it across the room. The screen shattered into thousands of pieces as the phone laid haphazardly on the floor, a small dent in the wall staring her down.
She let out a frustrated scream and kicked the wall, punching the only sturdy thing surrounding her crashing world. Will, the only person she could truly call home, was dead. Her body was trembling now, the sheer thought of the only boy she had truly loved dead. Though she could barely function, her mind slipped to Emma, thinking about the unstable girl standing in front of the boy she once loved as with a saw pressed against the his head, forcing her to watch the young boy's life get sucked out of him.
She paced around the small room, beads of sweat dripping down her neck, merging with the fallen tears. Her fists slammed back onto her desk, the impact causing her an intense amount of pain, that would no doubt leave bruises. She peered at the small surface, her eyes falling onto the trinkets and notebooks laying neatly on top one another.
"You're so neat, it's crazy. I don't ever think I could be as neat as you."
Without thinking she pushed everything off of the desk, watching her colour coded notebooks, writing utensils, and small awards clatter to the ground. She stood up and stormed into the cream coloured bathroom, her heart pounding in her ears with every step she took. She could hear her phone ringing, the sound of footsteps creaking against the wooden stairs cause her to break down.
She envied the students who watched her slowly break down, stopping only to send pity glances before continuing their day. They would sit in their small desks, drawing away as the horrid teach with trust issues would drone on and on about a topic nobody even cares about. They would sit without a care in the world, without the seat amount of fear that they would soon become a pawn in the game of life.
The scolding water ran down her bare back, steam surrounding her frail figure while tears merged with the droplets that fell from her head onto her cheeks. Her skin was raw from the amount of time she had scrubbed roughly against her red body, but no amount of scrubbing would clean away the filth she felt.
"Lavender body wash huh? Trying to impress me or something?"
"Shut up, the store was out of my favourite vanilla sent body wash."
"Stick with lavender, I like it better."
Her legs caved in as she fell towards the floor, ragged sobs echoing out of her mouth. As she pictured Will strapped against the wooden chair, his boy split in half. She remembered Will's mothers chocked sobs, her puffy eyes locked onto Emma who sat still, her body dripping with blood. Her mind was spinning and her heart pounded in her ears, tear failed to fall from her eyes as she let out sharp breathes, her body limp against the steamy glass wall.
She made no attempt to dry her drenched body as she slipped out of the still running shower. Making her way to the medicine cabinet she made eye contact with her reflection, a small gasp escaped her lips as she examined herself. Her eyes were bright red, the light in them drained as she gently ran a hand down her flushed cheeks.
Tears streamed down her face once more, though these tear were hot, filled with anger as her brows knit in frustration. Her slow even breaths soon grew quick, eyes flitting down her wet figure, water surrounding her against the tiled floors. Without any thought she let out a loud yell, connecting her fist with the mirror in front of her; shattering the reflective glass into small pieces.
Her knuckles split on impact, causing blood the drip seamlessly down her bare arms. She let out another scream, ignoring all thoughts in her mind as she continued to yell. Her knees eventually gave in, causing her to promptly fall to the ground and onto the broken shards of glass.
"I'm so sorry." She whispered, listening to the sound of water rushing. From the corner of her eyes she could see the tub fill with water, slowly rising up. She laid her head onto the wet floor, watching the warm water that had piled up in the tub spill, splash onto the floor. "I thought cutting one out of my life would save the other."
Water was spilling out of the tub in a gracious amount, her eyes slowly shutting while more tears fell. The sound of her name being called caused her to shiver, the word pathetic being bounced around in her head as Audrey came into her line of vision. The shorter girls voice faded into a soft ringing noise in her ears. She could see a few figures crowd around her, the ringing sound growing more and more into the voices of her friends.
"I'm so sorry."
"Somebody call her mom!"
"I should have been there with you, I should have been the one to save you."
Her eyes shut once more, focusing in on the sound of the running water, the feeling of the random splashes surrounding her feet. Footsteps echoed around her, panicked voices and the feeling of fingertips trying to find a pulse caused her to shiver, trying to squirm away from the cold hands. There were three pairs of hands on her warm figure, a towel thrown haphazardly on her and gentle hand pressing against her bleeding wounds.
"Everything's fine Ava. Just breath, breath."
"Will's dead, nothing's fine."
