The aroma of cinnamon wafted into Ava's room as she laid flat against the floor, a book grasped tightly against her arms. She allowed the dark curls that framed her face to fall forward as she ignored the urge to brush it behind her ears. The room was silent, but the kitchen just underneath her was rustling with clinks and clanks.

Her body was buzzing with excitement as she flipped the pages of the green covered book. The second installment to the Divergent series had already taken a toll on her stressed mind, easing her tense brain. She pushed the thoughts of last week away, her eyes eating up the beautifully written masterpiece that Veronica Roth had presented. A shiver passed through her body, reminding her of the ending summer nights and the approaching fall days.

With her bottom lips tucked between her teeth, she continued her evening read. Ignoring buzzing of texts that popped up every few seconds, she stood up and made her way to the window. She left her book resting face down with its spine outstretched, slowly crawling against her neatly made bed in order to gaze the outdoors.

Coffee coloured eyes scanned the dull grass, that desperately needed a trim across the short fence separating her home from Noah's. His spastic movement were hidden by the thick maroon curtains he had put up during his mourning period. She had barely spoken to him after their shared adventure at the killers lair. She shifted downward when his curtains moved, exposing his tired face.

"Spying on the neighbours again?" Her mother spoke allowed, making Ava flinch and flail backward onto her bed. She turned her head, watching her mother step into the room, a smile plastered on her tired face. "I'm surprised he's never caught you before."

"He's different now, after Riley."

"You all are." Her mother said softly, her hands running through Ava's dark curls. "That horrible person took away a constant in your life baby, it's okay to mourn. To change."

"What if the monster comes back mom? What if it comes after me?"

"I'll protect you Ava. It's just you and me baby. Us Young girls will always prevail no matter what. I promise."
