Chapter Five: Little Mob Bosses

DD was raised for thirteen years straight just how to be the perfect Mob Boss. That's right. Mob boss. Because how could someone as amazing and innocent as him not have some dark secret hidden away for shits and giggles? Because how could someone apparently as perfect as him not have something he finds ugly about himself?

He was ten. The first time he decided to defy his father. He hadn't shown up to his training after school, because a friend of his was excited about a new game he'd gotten. Even back then DD was DD and he didn't quite care if his father thought he was being unreasonable or irritating or just plain wrong.

DD came home late, oddly late for a ten year old, but he didn't care. He carried a weight on his shoulders from the day at his best friends because of what happened when they were alone. His mother was sitting in her chair, a look of pure concern on her face. His little sister, Baby Rose was what he called her, was spread out on the couch. She was eight. His father suddenly appeared in the corner of the kitchen, right before where the basement stairs would begin.

His father's killer red eyes had a look of hatred and anger so obvious that it scorched DD and made him want to turn around and disappear back into his friend's arms even after what happened there. He was ten. Ten. Ten! "Downstairs. Now." the chilling voice and quiet tone set DD ablaze and he dropped his things immediately, scrambling past his father in fear of being hit.

It had been a long time since his father had sounded like that. Last time it was when he found out DD's mother had been around with others. But of course DD wasn't thinking and he was down the stairs in seconds and he saw that familiar table and the familiar whip and he remembered when he was little and how much his father threatened to use it and then DD saw his uncle and everything hit him and-

"Sit down, Dirk." His uncle's eyes closed as DD followed the command. He sat on that table, tried to ignore the biting cold material and the way his lips felt oddly swollen and he knew exactly why for both of them.

"I'm sorry dad, I-"

"I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!" The roar of noise shut DD up and he looked down at his swinging feet and he closed his eyes so that the tears wouldn't fall because he knew that would get him into more trouble if they did.

"Mavic, bring me that needle and ink." No, No, no, no, no, no. DD didn't fight it. He knew if he fought it would be worse and he'd rather it turn out okay than bad.

His uncle carried over a tattoo gun. DD shook his head and that was when he started struggling and tears fell off his face, and he couldn't breathe and his fear was flashing around him in a veil of darkness thick enough to choke on. A scream tore from his throat. "SELENA!" Dd's father called. His mother rushed down the stairs in an attempt to try and comfort him, but his father's hand flashed out and he yelled to the adults in the room and suddenly DD knew exactly where this was going.

He lashed out. His foot collided with his father's chin and his fist hit his uncle's eye and he clawed out and avoided his mother at all costs. But their steely hands gripped his limbs and he was pinned and his father was holding the tattoo gun so close, and the whizzing sound buzzed his ears.

He screamed. He screamed so loud his throat hurt and Rose came rushing down in a flurry of blood red hair and pale skin. For once, DD was glad that she looked like their grandmother and not their mom otherwise he wouldn't be able to let her grab his hand and stroke it with her thumb and whisper quiet promises of getting through this.

"We'll get through this, I promise."

The next day, he went to school with a long sleeve and then a sweater. His best friend, his name was Zavier and he was someone that everyone loved. But when he graced DD with his presence and his hand brushed up his arm and DD flinched away the boy got worried. "DD?" he asked. "Do you hate me for what I did yesterday?"
