Chapter 5 - A Dream
My eyes grew wider and wider as I looked around this buzzing city; everything was always just so...busy. I didn't see one person stop to look up or down, to say hello, or even to breathe. And here I was; standing in the middle of them all, looking like an idiot with my mouth hanging open. How was I going to survive living in Thailand? I missed my parents; I wished they could have come with me. But no, I had to fly by myself and travel alone. ...Well, not alone; Keanu stood beside me, looking just as awestruck as I did. "This is too cool." He smiled.
It was that moment I knew everything was going to be fine, as his icy blue eyes met my vivid blue eyes. His wide smile was warm and comforting - the same smile that greeted me on the first day of middle school. He was the first friend I had made. He introduced me to Johnny, but he was more of an annoying acquaintance than a friend. Fingers found mine, which hung beside my hip, and they wrapped themselves around my hand. Keanu smiled at me once again, saying more than words could, then looked before us at the city. "We'll never get to our dorms if we just stand here." He said, and we were off. He led me through the crowds, lacing me between people while I held tightly to my backpack, holding his hand as tightly as I could.
"Don't worry, Zakyya, I got you." He said over his shoulder, gripping my hand tighter as well. I let out a breath I had been holding; trusting him with my life as we ran around the city. I didn't know where we were going, but Keanu must have, since he never once stopped to look at the map that was securely folded in his pants pocket.
Before long, Keanu stopped and pulled on my hand so I was standing beside him. Though we were both standing in front of the building we were staying in, safe and sound, he didn't let go of my hand, and I didn't want him to. "Wow," I said. "This is a crappy building."
We broke out into laughter as we looked up at the chipping bricks, the dusty windows, the rusted stairwells. I knew this wasn't going to be easy, living in an old building like this with hundreds of other high school kids, but I also knew it was going to be an adventure...and I had the love of my life to tag along with.
He doesn't know, of course... Or, at least, I don't think he knows. He may see the way I look at him, or how when he smiles at me my heart simply stops. Thanks to him I've missed enough heartbeats to save someone's life; lending them all the beats they'd need for a long, full, life.
"Come on; let's find your dorm first, I want to make sure you get there safely." He said. God, he was so protective sometimes...I had to admit though, I liked it. I nodded and he led us up the rusty stairwells, taking me to the very top floor. Other students were in their rooms, either laughing and hanging out or unpacking. I think I even caught a couple making out. My cheeks flushed bright red as I tried to pretend I hadn't seen, but the double take was enough for them to close the door, laughing at the 'kid'.
Once we reached my room, 80B, Keanu walked in first and I followed. "This is awesome; I'm right down the hall from you. So any time you need anything, just come get me." He smiled.
I smiled too, but for different reasons, I'm sure.
"This is nice...just needs a little tidying up and it'll be perfect." He nodded, looking around the dusty room. It only had one window, and it was barred.
"I had a feeling this was a looney bin once." I grimaced.
"What makes you say that?"
One sweeping look over the room later and I was walking over to the sunken bed; kneeling to the floor and pulling out large leather straps. "Hm?" I hummed, looking for a reaction from him.
