Chapter 1 - Sweet SIxteen

1 week later...

"What do you want for your birthday?" Olive asked me. Her locker was right next to mine.

"Calm down! It's not even for a couple of days. Besides, I said I didn't want anything."

"It's your 16th birthday! Finally, you get to drive! I'm going to get you something whether you like it or not," she said stubbornly. I didn't respond as I turned the dial on my locker and opened the door.

"Fine. If you want to do something, you can't tell me about it!" I complained, while grabbing my books out of my locker.

"Okay!" she said. "Come on, we're going to be late." Olivia turned around, her blonde hair whipping through the air.

"Fine," I said, slamming my locker closed and rushing after her. I don't know why she was making such a big deal about it. It's just another birthday, and I'm only turning 1 year older. She was making it sound like turning 16 was some huge accomplishment, which is wasn't.

I entered the classroom, already feeling grumpy about Olivia's obssession with my birthday. All eyes stared at me as I sat in my seat. I wasn't exactly popular. Olive was just about my only friend. As the morning announcements droned on, I had a small paper note land on my desk. I glanced around me, but no one looked like they had just given it to me. I opened it. It said:

          Go kill yourself, Emo.

I sank deeper into my seat as I stuffed the note into my pocket. This happened pretty much every day. Olivia looked over at me, concerned. I shook my head nonchantly. She looked back at the teacher, obviously unconvinced that nothing was wrong. I sat quietly as the boring announcements continued. This was going to be a long day.

Finally, the bell rang. School was over.

"MAC!" Olivia squealed as she ran over to me.

          "Yea?"

"Have you finally thought of a birthday present you want?" she persisted.

Friends, I thought. But of course, I didn't say that out loud. "Not really," I told her instead, grabbing my backpack and walking out of the classroom.

"Fine. You're making this hard. I'll figure it out by myself then," Olive pouted. "Oh, and I gotta babysit my little brother today, so hurry up. I'll wait for you in the car!" she shouted over her shoulder, walking towards the parking lot.

I walked down the crowded hallway alone. I had to squeeze by a lot of people, all of them staring at me like some freak. At least I could escape all of this for 2 days, since it was Friday. I threw my books into my locker as fast as I could and ran down the hallway. As I almost ran out of the huge crowd, someone tripped me and I fell flat on my face. I felt my cheeks heat up as everyone laughed around me. I quickly dashed over to Olive's car and got inside.

"Are you okay?" she asked me sympathetically.

"Not really." I was glad that Olive was my friend. She seemed to notice that no one really liked me, but she didn't care. That's what I liked about Olivia. She never cared what other people thought. Plus, she never pried when I didn't want to talk about something.
