The fire alarmed suddenly turned on while I was chopping the vegetables. I ran for a towel and started fanning the alarm but it didn't seem to work. Frightened of what my mom would do for causing a scene, my shaking arms took hold of a stool from the kitchen and placed it under the alarm box. I carefully stood on the stool and as I thought I was going to hit the off button, the stool decided to move, slip, and make me fall. And sadly, no superhero was there to catch me.
Landing on my right arm made me cry out a little. I took hold of it and tried standing up but before I could do anything, I heard a voice call out my name from the kitchen door. Panic took over me and I eagerly took for something to grab on before this abusive scene played along. But before anything, I replayed the voice that called out my name. It wasn't terrifying, it was as a matter of fact, calming. Something that I haven't felt in a long time. Except today with Thomas. Oh wait...
Looking up and seeing Thomas run towards me. Thank God.
"Oh Chrissy. What happened?" He asks while gripping my arm delicately while pulling me up.
"I fell." I look at the floor embarrassed. I haven't even realized the alarm was still on.
"I think I noticed. Are you okay?" He looked at my hand that was gripping my arm tightly and them at the fallen stool. "Did you fall from that?"
"Yeah, I-I was standing on the stool. You know, they are kind of tricky with you sometimes. Can't trust them." I tried playing it off but the fact that I just realized how my parents traumatized me to back is unfair and sad.
"Why were you trying to stand on that on the first place?" He looked at me confused. Hasn't he noticed the fire alarm?
"The alarm..." I trailed off trying to give him an idea. His eyes widened and he smiled as his cheeks turned red like cherries.
"Oh yeah, let me..." He simply lifted his hand up and turned it off. His height compared to mine is awful. I even need a freaking chair to reach the cereal from on top the refrigerator. But, I mean, it's cool right?
"Sorry. For interrupting you from.. anything you were doing." I turned around and continued on shopping the vegetables that were left. Now the pepper.
"Need any help?" He asks.
"No thanks. I'm almost done."
"It doesn't seem like it."
"What do you mean?" I pay attention to him as I carefully try not to chop a finger off.
"Well, you got a lot a vegetables left and the potatoes aren't smashed yet. They aren't even naked." I laugh at his use of words.
"Well, if you want you can strip them since you insist." I look at him for a second. Wrong thing to do as I feel a sharp sting at the side of my middle finger. "Ow. Fuck!" I curse lowly just in case my mother walked by.
"You okay?" Thomas is now next to me holding my hand.
"It stings like shit." I murmur.
"Where's the Aid Kit?"
"Under the bathroom sink."
"Be right back. Place it in water and try washing out the pepper from your finger or it'll hurt even more." He rushes out of the kitchen and disappears down the hall. I do as he told me to. Once all the pepper was washed out, I here footstep inside the kitchen. I turn around expecting to see Thomas with the white small box but I see my mother standing by the knife on the floor, watching the mess of pepper on the table and even worse, the three drops of blood on the floor, even counting the one on the knife. She bent down and grabbed the knife, making sure it teasingly scratched the floor as the sound made shivers run down my spine. I looked at her face which held no feelings.
