Deanna's POV
when Kenzie finally pulled away from my tight, protective grasp I looked into her teary green and gray eyes and with tears in my own, said "Time to go home." After a long walk we arrived at the orphanage, and not to our surprise, and angry Ms. Forsythia. "where have you two been?! I've been looking everywhere for you no good rug rats!" Kenzie and I simply waltzed past the sad excuse for a caretaker and sauntered away to our dorm up stairs and through hoards of children without a word. once we sat down on our squeaky mattresses the door of the shared bedroom burst open, revealing a shocked and scared looking Atticus. "You guys I was so worried about you! I told you I should have come this time! we could have avoided you getting lost and, and..." "Atty!" Kenzie exclaimed. "we were fine. we ran into some... trouble, along the way, but nothing we couldn't handle." Kenzie slowly got off the bed and made her way over to Atticus. by this time, the small built fourth year was teary eyed and shivering. I walked over to them and pulled them into a group hug, my head towering over Atticus and just the right size for me to rest my chin on the top of Kenzie's head, which to my surprise, she let me.
That night Kenzie was restless, like she is most nights. but tonight was quite violent. she's always having nightmares about what happened to her family. on her violent nights, sometimes I have to wake her up or hold her down. tonight was a 'hold her down while she yells and flails aimlessly' night. after her fit ended I finally got to lay down. she was calm. As I drifted off to sleep I thought about my night. my family. how I got myself into this mess of chasing after the order and why I help Kenzie fight them in the first place...
It was a quiet and cool spring evening. my mother Britannia and brother Tobias were cleaning up the kitchen after dinner, and I was sitting outside on the back deck with Quinn, Tobias's girlfriend, soon to be fiancée. at the time I was in my first year of Hogwarts. that night as me and Quinn sat out on the deck I knew deep down that something was wrong. Tobias and mother talked in hushed voices inside with what looked like fear on their faces. all I heard was something about an order looking for followers. when Tobias and mother came outside after clean up we all sat down on the furniture in petrified silence as mother told us about the Order of the snake. I looked down and saw that all three experienced wizards had their wands gripped tight. I excused myself to get my own. frantically I looked about my messy room for my dark brown wand with the little vines and red handle. "Ah ha!" I exclaimed as I spotted it under my bed. the moment I leaned down to retrieve it I heard a scream. and snatched the wand from its hiding place and rushed out the backdoor. the sight was brutal. Tobias and Quinn lay hurt and dying on the wood of the patio. tall men in black and green robes had my mother with their backs to me. my mother managed to look around them and see me. she stared at me with tears in her eyes and mouthed the words, "I love you... please run..." the tall cloaked figures say my mothers desperate message and spun around to face me. on their faces they had hideous masks that look like a snake opening his mouth to strike with fangs and venom loaded. at that moment the one with the largest fanged mask yelled "Avada Kadabra!!" with a swish of his wand and a scream from my mother, she fell on the ground, lifeless. as she lay, a single tear rolled down her cheek. immediately after, the cloaked men waved their wands and turned into black smoke. and before you knew it, they vanished into thin air, leaving behind a burn mark in the wood porch that looked somewhat like the dark mark. I fell to my knees in shock. "Deanna..." came a weak whisper from behind me. i turned around to see that my brother Tobias still had a little life left in him. I crawled over to him on hands and knees. Tobias reached around his neck and pulled out a thin wire from around his neck. he pulled on the wire and it snapped, and placed the wire necklace in my hand. it was surprisingly heavy. "please don't loose this kiddo. till help when you need it most. I love you..." and with that he took his last breath. crying I looked down at my hand at the wire he handed me. on the wire was a small iron ring. I rubbed the ring all around until I heard a soft ping noise. startled I dropped the wire and watched as a pendant in the shape of a turtle formed attached to the ring. once it had finished forming, I picked up the necklace and rubbed the glassy blue turtle with my thumb, and began to cry.
tonight, I fall asleep with my fingers stroking the necklace hanging loose around my neck with tears in my eyes.
