New Wheels and a New Home

It was raining when the plane finally landed. I wasn’t surprised; Alice had told us it would be cloudy skies for a good part of the month. I heard the steady beat of the drops on the wings as we waited for the plane to get into position. It was like a lullaby, as it usually was to me when I was a child in Seattle. At that moment I wished I could go back and remember those sleepless nights and wait for the rain to lull me to a slumber yet again. I wonder what it would feel like. Sleeping again, after all these years. Then I remember all those hours wasted on dreaming when they could be spent awake and active, discovering new things and having much more fun for real instead of in your imagination.

People began to rise, pulling me out of my daydream. Jasper squeezed my hand gently and pulled me out into the aisle. He grabbed our bags and headed for the exit, pausing to allow Carlisle and Esme to catch up. We followed them out of the plane, all of us trailing behind in twos of threes or even fours, a big family of misfits that somehow fit together.

We moved gracefully across the airport’s tiled floors. Many eyes wandered to us, but we were gone before they could blink in surprise. Past struggling mothers with children, between large clusters of humans hustling to get to their flight, and dodging carriages of luggage effortlessly as we made our way down the floor.

“Here are the keys to the cars,” Carlisle said as he handed me, Jasper, Rosalie, Edward, Jacob, and Alice keys to our new cars. Everyone else had their cars waiting for them at the new house. “Just follow me out of the airport and back to the house.”

With that, we each split up in search of our new wheels. Jasper quickly kissed me before darting off to find his car before the bragging Emmett. I smiled to myself as I strung the bag over my shoulder and made my way more slowly through the parking spaces. Continuing to push the unlock and lock button, no vehicle around me beeped or glowed or whatever cars did now-a-days. A flashy silver car peeled out from the many floors of the parking garage and sped towards me. I caught sight of Renesmee clutching the handle above the door for her life as Jacob hooted in glee. That man was obsessed with cars. Deciding to check from the top floor down, I trekked up the layers easily. I hadn’t spotted anyone else on the lower floors, so I hoped my assumption was correct. Edward honked quickly as he fly by in yet another silver car, though less glamorous than Jacob’s ostentatious car. Quickening my pace I was finally at the top and witnessed Jasper and Emmett wrestling for the two keys that were knocked to the ground.

Rosalie, sitting with her arms crossed on the hood of a cute little black convertible, pushed herself up and silently took one of the tossed keys. I watched with an amused smile as she hopped into her car and started the engine. Emmett and Jasper looked up from their scuffle for a moment, but she was already speeding down the drive and out of our sights. He shouted after her, but Rose’s car was gone for good. Jasper wasted no time at Emmett’s shift in attention. He dove for his keys and jumped away from Emmett’s powerful grasped. I watched as he elegantly swung into a slick black car and suddenly sped forwards. The car was out of sight before Emmett could cry out.

“Looks like you’re walking.” I called jokingly, jingling my newly acquired keys in front of me. He smiled hugely at me and strode forwards.

“DJ,” He said in a booming voice and pulled me into a crushing hug. “That’s my girl.”

I laughed joyfully at him, but it was cut off by a car beeping madly from a little ways down. We exchanged a look before glancing at the noise. A boxy yellow car stood running with a head sticking out of its open window. My eyes narrowed at the sight of Alice but I held my tongue. Her eyes were a sudden blaze of hatred and threats, almost making me cower in fear.

“Emmett,” She barked in her high-pitched voice, though it seemed to be a lower menacing growl. “Come with me.”

Emmett shot me a semi-nervous and semi-confused look before setting me to my feet again. “Only if I get to drive!” He hollered, jogging over with his usual good natured mood. I wish his disposition would rub off on Alice and make my family’s life a little bit simpler. I watched as Emmett took Alice’s place and leapt into motion as soon as the doors were closed. He waved as he passed, slowing down ever so slightly. I heard a hiss from beside him, but they drove off before I could check.
